Chapter 2
Close Calls and Confessions
The next day, Emily Harper found herself seated between two worlds — literally.
During lunch, Luke slid into the seat across from her at the cafeteria table. “Hey, Em,” he said casually, passing her a granola bar. “I saved you a spot.”
“Thanks, Luke,” Emily replied, smiling, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. He had a way of making ordinary moments feel… special.
Just as she unwrapped the granola bar, Chloe Matthews appeared, sliding into the seat next to her with a dramatic flourish. “Well, well, what do we have here?” Chloe teased, leaning closer. “Lunch date already?”
Emily’s cheeks flushed, but Luke laughed, brushing it off. “We’re just eating, Chloe.”
“Uh-huh,” Chloe said with a smirk. “Sure. But I bet you’re thinking about calculus homework, right?”
Emily groaned, “Chloe, you’re impossible!”
Chloe shrugged, her golden hair falling across her shoulder. “I just like keeping things interesting.”
For the rest of lunch, Emily couldn’t decide who made her heart race more. Luke’s steady, easy charm gave her comfort, while Chloe’s energy and teasing kept her on edge, making every glance feel electric.
Later that afternoon, the three were assigned to work together on a group project in biology. Emily sat between Luke and Chloe once again.
Luke leaned over, whispering softly, “I think we make a good team, don’t you?”
Emily nodded, feeling a flutter of excitement. “Yeah… we do.”
Chloe, noticing the exchange, raised an eyebrow. “Oh, I see how it is,” she said playfully, nudging Emily with her elbow. “Don’t forget about me.”
Emily looked between them, realizing just how tangled things were becoming. Her heart couldn’t decide between the safe, dependable warmth of Luke or the thrilling, unpredictable spark Chloe brought into her life.
By the end of the day, Emily walked home feeling a mix of excitement and confusion. She knew one thing for certain: senior year was going to be more complicated than she had ever imagined — and her heart was caught right in the middle of it.
