Chapter 3
Mixed Signals
The next morning, Emily Harper walked into her first-period class, notebook clutched to her chest, only to find Luke already sitting at her usual spot. He looked up and smiled, a little nervous.
“Morning, Emily,” he said softly. “Do you… want to walk together after class? Just us?”
Emily felt her heart flutter. This was it — a moment that could feel special, one-on-one. “I’d like that,” she whispered, smiling.
But as soon as the bell rang and they gathered their things, Chloe appeared by Emily’s locker, leaning casually against the metal frame. “Going somewhere interesting?” she asked, flashing her mischievous grin.
Emily hesitated. “Just walking… with Luke.”
Chloe raised an eyebrow. “Oh, that sounds… exclusive. Mind if I join?”
Emily’s stomach twisted. She knew Chloe had a way of making every situation complicated, and now it was happening again. “Uh… maybe another time?”
Chloe’s grin widened. “Sure, sure. But don’t forget, I’m full of surprises.”
Luke shot Emily a look — a mix of amusement and frustration. “She’s… something, isn’t she?”
Emily laughed nervously. “Yeah… something like that.”
As they walked, Luke tried to make the conversation light, asking about Emily’s weekend and sharing little stories from his own. His presence was steady, grounding, and comforting — the kind of feeling that made Emily’s heart race in a calm, warm way.
But then came the text. Chloe:
“Hey, Emily… meet me after school? I have something to show you. You won’t want to miss it ;)”
Emily’s stomach fluttered again, but this time with anxiety. She wanted to see Chloe, to laugh and tease like they always did, but she also didn’t want to hurt Luke or lead him on.
That evening, after finishing homework, Emily made a choice — she went to meet Chloe first, hoping to keep things light and friendly, even though her heart felt pulled in two directions.
Chloe greeted her with a playful hug. “Ready for a little adventure?” she asked, eyes sparkling. “Don’t worry… just fun.”
As they walked together through the quiet streets, Emily realized just how complicated senior year could get. Luke’s steady affection, Chloe’s electric charm — she liked them both, and she didn’t know if her heart could handle choosing yet.
One thing was certain: her feelings weren’t going away. And the more time she spent with either of them, the more tangled her heart became.
