Chapter 8

Sparks and Tensions

Friday evening found Emily Harper in the school courtyard, waiting for Chloe to meet her for a quick walk before heading home. She hadn’t realized Luke would be there too, standing under the lamppost with his backpack slung over one shoulder.

“Emily,” Luke said, stepping forward. “Can we talk?”

Chloe, leaning casually against a nearby tree, crossed her arms and smirked. “Oh, this should be interesting.”

Emily’s stomach twisted. “Luke, Chloe—this isn’t what it looks like.”

Luke’s jaw tightened, his eyes locked on Chloe. “I just want to know where you stand, Chloe. You’ve been… hovering around Emily a lot. I need to understand what’s going on.”

Chloe laughed softly, a little sharp. “Hovering? I’m her friend. I’m here because she’s important to me. That’s all.”

“You and I both know it’s more than that,” Luke shot back, frustration creeping into his voice.

Emily stepped between them. “Stop! Both of you! Please…”

The two stared at her, then at each other. The tension was thick, almost tangible, like electricity in the air.

Chloe softened slightly, looking at Emily with a small, reluctant smile. “I didn’t mean to upset him. I just… I like Emily. I can’t help it.”

Luke exhaled sharply, rubbing the back of his neck. “I like her too. That’s why I can’t just stand by and watch.”

Emily’s heart raced. She didn’t know where to look or what to say. Her feelings were tangled — she cared for both of them deeply, but in very different ways.

“I… I need time,” she finally said, her voice trembling. “I care about both of you, and I don’t want anyone to get hurt. Please… just give me a little space to figure this out.”

The two of them exchanged glances, then nodded reluctantly. Chloe gave a playful wink. “Space granted… for now.”

Luke’s expression softened. “Take all the time you need. I’ll wait.”

Emily watched as they walked away in opposite directions, leaving her alone in the courtyard. Her chest ached with longing and confusion. She knew that time wouldn’t make the choice any easier — it might only make her feelings grow stronger.

Senior year had officially turned into a whirlwind of hearts, sparks, and tension. And Emily Harper’s heart was caught right in the middle.
