Chapter 9
Close Encounters
Monday afternoon, Emily Harper found herself walking home from school with Luke Bennett. The streets were quiet, the autumn breeze carrying the scent of fallen leaves, and Emily couldn’t help but notice how natural it felt to be beside him.
“So,” Luke began, kicking a small pile of leaves, “have you thought more about that math problem from class?”
Emily laughed, shaking her head. “Not really… I was too busy thinking about everything else.”
He glanced at her, eyebrows raised. “Everything else?”
She blushed. “Yeah… you know, life, senior year, everything.”
Luke smiled softly. “I get it. I feel the same way. But whatever happens, I want you to know… I’m here. For you.”
Emily felt her heart swell. His words were steady, comforting, and made her feel safe in a way that Chloe never had. But just as she opened her mouth to respond, her phone buzzed. A message from Chloe:
“Meet me at the park after school. I have a surprise for you ;)”
Emily’s stomach flipped. She looked at Luke, torn. “I… I have to go,” she muttered, feeling guilty.
Luke nodded, understanding but pained. “Alright. See you tomorrow?”
Later that day, Emily met Chloe at the park, where the golden leaves swirled around them. Chloe handed her a small bundle — a handmade bracelet she had been working on for weeks.
“I made this for you,” Chloe said, sliding it onto Emily’s wrist. “Just because. You’re… important to me.”
Emily’s chest tightened. Chloe’s touch, her teasing smile, and her bold gestures made Emily feel alive in a way she hadn’t realized she could. “It’s beautiful, Chloe. Thank you.”
Chloe grinned, tugging gently on Emily’s hand. “Don’t forget… you have to spend more time with me. Just us. No distractions.”
Emily walked home that evening, bracelet on her wrist, heart torn in two. Luke’s steady care, Chloe’s thrilling energy — she liked them both, and she couldn’t deny it.
Her emotions were tangled, complicated, and impossible to ignore. Senior year wasn’t just about homework and college applications anymore. It was about matters of the heart, messy and unpredictable — and Emily Harper was right in the middle of it.
