Chapter 10

The Fall Festival

The annual Crestwood High Fall Festival was in full swing, lanterns hanging from trees and the smell of caramel apples filling the air. Emily Harper wandered through the crowd, her heart racing — not from the festival rides, but from knowing that both Luke Bennett and Chloe Matthews would be there.

She spotted Luke first, leaning against the cider stand, nervously sipping a hot drink. His eyes found hers, and he waved shyly. Emily’s chest warmed.

But Chloe appeared from the other side, playful grin in place, holding two tickets for the Ferris wheel. “Come on, Emily! You’re not going to let him steal all the fun, are you?”

Emily hesitated. Her heart thumped as she realized she had to choose — at least temporarily — who to spend her first festival moments with. She took a deep breath and went with Chloe, climbing into the Ferris wheel car with her.

“Hey, it’s crowded up here, huh?” Chloe teased, nudging Emily lightly.

Emily laughed, feeling the rush of excitement Chloe always seemed to bring. “Yeah… it’s… fun.”

Below, Luke watched them go, a small frown creasing his brow. He sipped his cider, trying to mask the twinge of jealousy that twisted in his chest.

Once the Ferris wheel reached the top, Chloe leaned close. “You know,” she whispered, “I’ve never told anyone this, but I like you. A lot.”

Emily’s heart skipped a beat. The thrill, the danger of confessing something so bold, made her feel alive. “Chloe… I…”

Chloe leaned back, her expression softening. “Hey, no pressure. I just wanted you to know. I like being around you, and I think you know that already.”

Meanwhile, Luke’s words echoed in her mind: I like you — a lot. And I’m willing to wait, to fight for this, if you want me to.

Emily’s heart twisted. Luke’s steady affection, Chloe’s electric energy — she liked them both, and the festival lights only made it harder to think clearly.

By the end of the night, Emily walked home, heart tangled, realizing that the Fall Festival hadn’t just been about rides, games, or caramel apples. It had been about realizing that senior year was about choices, about hearts, and about the messy, thrilling, unpredictable thing called love.

And Emily Harper was right in the middle of it.
