Chapter 14
Misunderstood Messages
It started with a text—a simple, harmless text—from Ethan.
“Meet me at the coffee shop. I have something to tell you.”
Samantha’s imagination went wild. Something serious? A confession? A secret? She arrived at the coffee shop fifteen minutes early, nerves jangling, only to find Ethan already juggling three cups of coffee and a bag of pastries.
“You’re early,” he said, beaming. “Perfect timing for… breakfast chaos!”
Samantha blinked. “Breakfast chaos? Ethan, I thought you had something serious to tell me.”
He laughed nervously. “I do! Just… not that serious.”
Before she could ask, his phone buzzed, and he jumped, spilling one of the coffee cups. Hot liquid dripped onto the counter, narrowly missing Samantha’s bag. She grabbed a napkin, stifling a laugh.
“You’re literally impossible,” she muttered, shaking her head.
“I know!” he said, flustered but grinning. “But I promise, this is serious in the best way.”
He handed her a small, carefully wrapped package. “Open it.”
Samantha peeled back the wrapping to reveal a tiny keychain in the shape of a canoe. She looked at him, confused.
“It’s for our canoe adventures,” Ethan said softly. “To remind us that no matter what, we’ll always make it through the chaos… together.”
Her chest warmed. “Ethan…”
He reached across the table, taking her hand. “I know I mess up a lot. I’m clumsy, ridiculous… but I mean every word when I say I like you. A lot.”
Samantha laughed softly, shaking her head. “I think you’ve officially confused the words ‘messy’ and ‘romantic,’ but yes… I like you too.”
They laughed together, the coffee shop buzzing around them, yet somehow it all felt like their little world. Even in chaos, even in misunderstanding, their connection grew stronger.
And Samantha realized that with Ethan, love was messy, hilarious, and completely impossible to resist.
