Chapter 1

Wickets and Whispers

The First Innings

The sun beat down on the village green, and the hum of weekend chatter filled the air as the local cricket club gathered for the season opener. Charlotte adjusted her cap nervously, clutching her bat. Today was her first proper match for the women’s side, and she wanted to prove she belonged.

“Calm down, Charlotte,” her best friend Emily whispered, handing her a bottle of water. “You’ve practised for this. Just swing like you always do.”

Charlotte nodded, but her heart raced anyway. That’s when she saw him—blond hair glinting in the sun, crisp white cricket whites, and a confident grin that made her stomach flutter.

“New player?” he asked, jogging over with effortless ease. His eyes were bright, teasing, but friendly.

Charlotte blinked. “Uh… yes. First match. I’m Charlotte.”

“Alexander,” he said, extending a hand. “If you want any pointers, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve.”

Her cheeks warmed as they shook hands. She had no idea that this charming, easygoing teammate would become her greatest distraction this season.

The bowler ran up, the ball cutting through the warm air. Charlotte swung instinctively. Crack! The ball soared over the fielders and landed for four runs.

Alexander whistled appreciatively. “Nice hit! Looks like you’ve got some serious skill.”

Charlotte smiled, the tension melting away. Maybe cricket wasn’t just about runs and wickets. Maybe it was about the people you shared the pitch with—and perhaps, just maybe, about the sparks that flew off the field as well.
