Chapter 20
Seasons of the Heart
The village green was quiet that evening, bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun. The cricket season had ended, and with it, the whirlwind of matches, muddy mishaps, and playful teasing.
Charlotte walked across the pitch, Alexander waiting near the pavilion. He held a small bouquet of wildflowers—this time, carefully arranged, not the spontaneous pick from the meadow—and his eyes sparkled with warmth.
“You know,” he said, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, “I’ve been thinking… the season isn’t really over. Not for us.”
Charlotte smiled, her heart fluttering. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
Alexander took her hands in his. “Charlotte, these past weeks… every laugh, every misstep, every quiet moment has made me realize something. I don’t want to just be your cricket partner. I want to be the one who’s there through every season—spring, summer, autumn, winter… all of them. With you.”
Charlotte felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes, not from sadness but from the overwhelming warmth of his words. “Alexander… I feel the same. I’ve never… I’ve never felt this way before. You make everything brighter.”
He smiled, brushing a thumb over her knuckles. “Then it’s settled. We’re in this together. All seasons, all adventures… together.”
Charlotte laughed softly, leaning into him. “Together.”
They shared a gentle kiss, sweet and full of promise, the kind that spoke of trust, playfulness, and a love that had blossomed gradually but surely. Around them, the village green seemed still, as if holding its breath to witness the start of something beautiful.
As they walked hand in hand off the pitch, the sun dipping below the horizon, Charlotte realized that life—like cricket—was unpredictable, messy, and thrilling.
And she wouldn’t trade a single moment of this season, for it had given her Alexander, her partner, her love, and the start of many seasons to come.
The world felt brighter, warmer, and full of laughter. And Charlotte knew, without a doubt, that the best innings of her life was just beginning.
