Chapter 1
Café Starlight
The Unexpected Tune
Emma Harris wiped down the counter for the third time that morning, her fingers moving in a familiar rhythm.
The soft hum of the espresso machine, the scent of freshly ground coffee, and the gentle chatter of early customers always brought her a sense of calm.
Café Starlight was her little sanctuary, a place where the world outside seemed to pause for just a moment.
The bell above the door jingled, and Emma looked up, expecting a regular. Instead, she saw a tall man with tousled brown hair, a guitar slung over his shoulder, and a smile that seemed too wide to be entirely trustworthy.
“Hi,” he said, his voice warm but slightly rough from travel or late-night singing. “Is this… Café Starlight?”
Emma nodded, curious despite herself. “It is. Can I help you?”
“I’m Ethan Clarke,” he said, extending a hand. “I heard you host live music on weekends. Thought I’d see if there’s space for a performance tonight.”
Emma blinked. “Uh… we usually have a sign-up sheet for performers, but—well, I guess you can talk to the manager. That is, if—” She hesitated, noticing the way his eyes scanned the café with genuine interest, not arrogance.
Ethan grinned. “I’ll talk to her. But honestly, I wouldn’t mind just playing for a cup of coffee.”
Emma chuckled softly, shaking her head. There was something disarming about him, a kind of chaotic charm that made the café feel suddenly brighter. “Alright. I’ll see if that can happen.”
As she poured him a cappuccino, Emma found herself sneaking glances at him, wondering what stories lay behind his easy smile and wandering eyes. He strummed lightly on his guitar while sipping, and the soft melody floated across the café, weaving into the morning’s quiet routine.
Emma didn’t know it yet, but the ordinary rhythm of her life was about to change—suddenly, sweetly, and in ways she hadn’t anticipated.
