Chapter 15
Fireside Promises
That evening, after a long day of arranging holiday displays and helping last-minute shoppers, Emma returned to The Page Turner to find Lucas already there, leaning casually against the counter.
“I saved you a spot by the fireplace,” he said, nodding toward a cozy corner with a small blanket spread over two chairs.
Emma smiled, setting down her bag. “You really know how to make a girl feel special.”
Lucas grinned, pulling the blanket around them as they sat side by side. Outside, the snow had begun falling gently again, but inside, the warmth of the fire and the soft light created a quiet, perfect world just for them.
They sipped cocoa in comfortable silence for a few moments before Lucas broke it. “Emma… can I tell you something a little serious?”
“Of course,” she replied, her hand brushing his.
He took a deep breath. “I know we’ve been having fun, laughing, teasing… but I also want you to know that I’m serious about us. About you. I don’t just want fleeting moments—I want all of them. I want to be there for you, through the snowstorms, the chaos, the quiet nights. Everything.”
Emma felt her chest tighten, warmth flooding her cheeks. “Lucas… I feel the same. I’ve been scared to admit it sometimes, but I want that too. All of it. With you.”
Lucas reached out, gently holding her hands in his. “Really?”
“Really,” she whispered, smiling through the sudden flutter in her heart.
He leaned closer, brushing his lips against hers in a soft, lingering kiss. When they pulled back, their foreheads rested together, and the firelight danced across their faces.
“Then it’s settled,” Lucas said, grinning. “We’re officially… us.”
Emma laughed softly, resting her head on his shoulder. “I like the sound of that.”
The snow fell outside, silent and gentle, but inside the little bookstore, warmth, laughter, and the quiet certainty of love filled every corner.
Emma realized that some promises didn’t need grand gestures or words—they were made in soft touches, shared cocoa, and the comfort of knowing someone would always be there.
And in that moment, she knew that with Lucas, winter would always be magical.
