Chapter 14
Ice Rink Rivalry
The following weekend, Willow Creek opened its temporary winter ice rink in the town square. Emma and Lucas arrived bundled up, laughing as the cold air nipped at their noses.
“You ready for this?” Lucas asked, tightening his scarf.
Emma smirked. “Born ready. Just don’t fall and embarrass yourself.”
“Funny,” Lucas replied, rolling his eyes. “You’re the one who’s going to be clinging to the railing for dear life.”
They stepped onto the ice, Emma wobbling slightly but regaining her balance. Lucas grinned, skating effortlessly around her. “See? Easy.”
Emma scowled playfully. “Easy for you. I’m more… graceful in spirit than in action.”
Within minutes, a playful rivalry had sparked. They challenged each other to races, tried to mimic fancy spins, and occasionally bumped into each other deliberately, laughing each time.
At one point, Emma slipped and Lucas caught her just in time, holding her close. “You okay?” he asked, his voice gentle.
Emma’s cheeks flushed. “I’m fine… thanks to you.”
Lucas smiled, brushing a snowflake from her hair. “I’ve got you. Always.”
Later, they sat at the rink’s edge, sipping warm cocoa, their legs brushing. The playful competition had faded into comfortable closeness.
“You know,” Emma said softly, “I think I like these little challenges with you. Makes life more… fun.”
Lucas grinned. “I was hoping you’d say that. Because I plan on challenging you a lot more in the future.”
Emma laughed, leaning her head on his shoulder. “Good. Because I’m not backing down.”
The evening ended with them skating hand in hand under the twinkling lights, their laughter mingling with the soft hum of holiday music.
The playful rivalry, the warmth of shared cocoa, and the closeness of holding hands in the cold made Emma realize that love wasn’t just about quiet moments—it was also about joy, laughter, and teasing each other endlessly.
As they left the rink, arms linked and cheeks pink from cold and laughter, Emma knew that every little adventure with Lucas made her fall a little more in love.
