Chapter 10

Secrets and Smiles

It was another quiet Wednesday afternoon when Ethan appeared at Lila’s doorstep, holding a small, wrapped package.

“For me?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.

“For you,” he confirmed, a mischievous glint in his hazel eyes. “Open it.”

Inside was a tiny sketchbook, just her size, filled with blank pages. A note on the first page read: “For the moments you notice and want to remember. Or maybe for the moments we create together.”

Lila’s chest warmed. “Ethan…” she started, but he held up a finger.

“No words,” he said playfully. “Just a smile. You can thank me later.”

She couldn’t help it—she laughed, brushing her hair behind her ear. “This is… perfect.”

“Good,” he said, leaning casually against the doorframe. “But I do have a secret.”

Lila tilted her head, curious. “A secret?”

He leaned closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “I’ve been watching you—well, not creepily—but noticing you when you sketch in the park. You always look so… in your element. It’s… nice to see.”

Lila’s cheeks flushed, and she looked down at the gift in her hands. “I… I didn’t know you noticed.”

“I notice everything about you,” he admitted softly, eyes locked on hers. “And I like it.”

For a moment, the world outside faded. No traffic, no passersby, no noise—just them, standing in the quiet hallway, the unspoken words and small smiles hanging between them.

Lila finally met his gaze, a slow smile spreading across her face. “I like it too,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Ethan grinned, the mischievous spark returning. “Good. Because I plan on noticing you a lot more.”

And in that simple, intimate exchange, Lila realized that the slow burn they shared wasn’t just growing—it was flourishing. Every small secret, every shared smile, every playful tease had been building to this quiet, undeniable closeness.

As Ethan finally waved goodbye, she held the little sketchbook close, heart fluttering with the certainty that something beautiful was quietly, steadily taking root between them.
