Chapter 11

Twilight Wanderings

It started as a casual plan—Ethan had texted her that afternoon with a simple question:

“Want to take a walk along the river tonight? The sunset looks incredible.”

Lila hesitated for only a moment before replying yes. By early evening, they were strolling along the riverside path, the sky painted in shades of orange and lavender, the city lights beginning to twinkle across the water.

The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of autumn leaves and river mist. Lila tucked her hands into her coat pockets, glancing at Ethan beside her. He walked slowly, matching her pace, sketchbook swinging lightly at his side.

“You always find the most beautiful spots,” she said softly.

He shrugged, though his smile was gentle. “I just notice them. And I like sharing them with people who… notice too.”

Her heart fluttered. “I do notice,” she whispered.

They walked in companionable silence, occasionally pointing out details—a lone swan gliding across the water, a small café casting golden light onto the sidewalk.

Eventually, they stopped at a quiet bench overlooking the river. Ethan pulled out a small sketchpad, but instead of drawing, he simply handed it to her.

“For you,” he said. “Write something. Draw something. Anything that feels like this moment.”

Lila opened the pad, smiling at the blank page. She sat beside him, pencil in hand, and began to sketch the river, the glowing lights, and the faint outline of a figure sitting beside her—him.

Ethan watched her work quietly, his shoulder occasionally brushing against hers. Neither spoke, and yet the silence was filled with a growing, undeniable intimacy.

When she finally looked up, he was gazing at her, eyes soft and earnest. “You make even quiet moments feel… significant,” he said.

Lila’s cheeks warmed. “So do you.”

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a final glow across the river, they sat side by side, sketchbooks in hand, hearts quietly beating in rhythm. The slow burn between them was no longer a whisper—it was a gentle fire, steady, comforting, and impossible to ignore.

And in that shared twilight, Lila realized just how much she wanted to see where this fire would lead.
