Chapter 14
Slippery Encounters
The streets of Hawthorne were glistening with ice from the previous night’s frost. Ivy bundled herself tightly in her coat, scarf wrapped securely around her neck, as she headed to the café for an early morning prep shift.
Just as she rounded the corner near the bakery, she slipped on a patch of ice, arms flailing.
Before she could hit the ground, strong hands caught her. “Careful!” Lucas said, steadying her effortlessly.
“I… thanks,” Ivy gasped, laughing nervously as she regained her balance. Her heart was racing—not from the near fall, but from the closeness of him.
Lucas didn’t release her right away, his fingers brushing hers for just a moment longer than necessary. “You really need to watch these streets,” he teased, though his blue eyes twinkled with amusement.
Ivy shook her head, a smile tugging at her lips. “And miss the chance to run into you? Never.”
He grinned, tilting his head. “You’re impossible.”
“I prefer ‘charmingly resilient,’” she shot back, her laughter mixing with his.
They continued walking together, stepping carefully over the icy patches.
Every brush of their hands, every playful comment, added fuel to the slow-burning tension between them.
For a moment, it felt as if the world had narrowed to just the two of them, the crisp winter air buzzing with unspoken feelings.
When they finally reached the café, Lucas lingered at the door. “Same time tomorrow?” he asked, voice soft, almost hesitant.
Ivy nodded, a warmth spreading through her chest. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
As Lucas walked away, Ivy felt a smile she couldn’t suppress. These little encounters—the accidental touches, shared laughter, and fleeting moments—were building something undeniable between them, a love that moved slowly but promised to linger.
