Chapter 11
Snowy Interruptions
The following week, Emma and Luke had planned a quiet afternoon together at the local bookstore café—a cozy corner where they could read, sketch, and chat without distractions. Emma arrived early, her sketchbook tucked under her arm, excited for their time together.
But when Luke arrived, his expression was unusually tense. “Sorry I’m late,” he said, sliding into the seat across from her. “I… had to deal with some family stuff.”
Emma sensed something off. “Everything okay?”
Luke hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah… mostly. Just… a misunderstanding with my cousin. He’s been upset about me spending so much time with you.”
Emma blinked, surprised. “Upset? Why?”
Luke sighed. “I think he’s worried I’m… distracted. He doesn’t understand how important this is to me. To us.”
Emma reached across the table, touching his hand. “Luke… we’ll figure it out. You don’t have to choose between your family and us.”
He looked at her, gratitude softening his eyes. “I know… but sometimes it feels like they don’t see what we have. That maybe I’m overstepping by… caring about you this much.”
Emma smiled, squeezing his hand. “Caring about someone isn’t overstepping. You just have to show them how much it matters—how much we matter.”
Luke exhaled, a mix of relief and lingering tension. “You always know what to say. How do you do that?”
Emma laughed softly. “A little intuition… and a lot of practice with sketching people’s moods.”
For the rest of the afternoon, they focused on their own little world.
Sketches, books, and soft conversation filled the time, allowing them to escape the minor challenges outside.
Emma realized that even when outside forces tested them, their connection only grew stronger, proving that the warmth they shared could outshine any misunderstanding or worry.
