Chapter 12

Stormbound

Ashford woke to a thick blanket of snow that morning, the streets quiet except for the occasional crunch of tires and boots. Emma had planned to meet Luke for their usual sketching session, but the storm quickly turned the city into a snowy labyrinth.

She called him, laughing as she dodged snowflakes. “Think we can make it to the park today, or are we trapped?”

Luke’s voice crackled with amusement over the phone. “Trapped. The roads are a mess. But… maybe we can make the best of it. Want to come over? I’ve got blankets, cocoa, and a fire.”

Emma smiled despite the cold. “Sounds perfect. I’ll be there in ten.”

By the time she arrived, snowflakes clinging to her coat, Luke had transformed his living room into a cozy haven. Thick blankets, pillows strewn across the floor, and the fire crackling in the hearth made the space warm and inviting.

They spent the day wrapped in blankets, sipping cocoa, and sketching together on the floor. Every so often, Luke would reach over to brush snow from Emma’s hair or adjust the corner of her sketchbook, small gestures that made her heart flutter.

“Do you ever get tired of winter?” Emma asked, looking out at the snow-covered streets.

Luke shook his head, his eyes soft. “Not when I can spend it with you. Snowstorms aren’t so bad when there’s warmth inside—and someone to share it with.”

Emma’s cheeks heated. “You’re impossible.”

He grinned, leaning closer. “Impossible, yes. But only when it counts.”

As the storm raged outside, the two of them shared quiet laughter, gentle teasing, and small touches that lingered just a bit too long. Emma realized that sometimes, being forced to stay in one place could bring hearts closer in ways the rushing world never allowed.

By the time the night fell and the storm began to soften, Emma and Luke had shared more than just a day indoors—they had shared a comfort and closeness that neither could deny.

And as Emma walked home through the softly falling snow later that evening, she knew their connection had deepened into something lasting, quiet, and undeniably theirs.
