Chapter 12

Confessions in the Dusk

The boardwalk was quiet, painted in the soft lavender hues of twilight. Hannah carried her sketchbook, hoping for a few moments alone with the sea—and with Ethan.

He was already there, leaning against the railing, tossing a pebble into the waves. When he saw her, his face lit up.

“Hey,” he called softly, as if not to disturb the gentle hum of the evening.

“Hey,” she replied, settling beside him.

For a few minutes, they watched the water together, silence stretching comfortably between them. Then Ethan glanced at her, a faint smirk on his lips.

“You know,” he began, “I’ve been meaning to tell you something.”

Hannah tilted her head, curious. “Oh?”

“I… I might have been exaggerating in my letters a little,” he said, lowering his voice. “Not about the feelings, of course… just… about how brave I am. About how composed I am when things get tricky.”

Hannah laughed softly, shaking her head. “You? Brave? Composed? I’ve been thinking the same thing about myself.”

“Really?” he teased. “Because I’ve got evidence to the contrary. Like last week, when you caught me tripping over that loose board.”

“You’re still recovering from the embarrassment, aren’t you?” she asked, laughing, her eyes sparkling in the dim light.

“Maybe,” he admitted. “But now I have to confess… it wasn’t just embarrassment. I was hoping you’d notice me. That you’d… care.”

Hannah felt her heart skip a beat. “I did notice,” she whispered. “More than you think.”

Ethan turned slightly, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “So… we’re both… confessing little secrets?”

“Yes,” she said, her voice low. “And maybe that’s the best kind of confession.”

He smiled, a warmth in his gaze that made her chest flutter. “Then I’ll keep my secret for a little while longer… just to see you smile.”

They sat side by side, shoulders touching, watching the last light fade into night. The playful confessions, the quiet admissions—they were building a closeness that no letter could fully capture. And for Hannah, the slow burn of their love had never felt more real.
