Chapter 2

Shared Melodies

The next day, Clara arrived early at the music academy, violin case in hand, nerves buzzing with anticipation. She hoped she would see Liam again—hoping, more than she wanted to admit, that he remembered her.

She did. He was sitting on a bench near the practice rooms, tuning his cello. When he saw her, a small smile spread across his face. “Hey, Clara. Ready to make some noise?”

Clara laughed, the tension easing slightly. “I think so. I hope you’re ready too—I haven’t played in a while.”

“Don’t worry,” Liam said, standing and offering his hand to help her carry her violin. “We’ll make it sound amazing. Music’s meant to be shared, right?”

They entered an empty practice room together. The afternoon sunlight spilled across the wooden floor as they unpacked their instruments. Liam struck a few tentative notes, testing the room’s acoustics. Clara followed, letting her bow glide over the strings.

At first, their timing was off, each note slightly mismatched, but slowly, they found a rhythm. The music wove between them, gentle and imperfect, yet somehow beautiful.

“You’ve got a delicate touch,” Liam said after a pause, his eyes meeting hers. “I can tell you really feel the music.”

Clara felt a blush rise. “Thanks… so do you. The cello—it’s… powerful, in a quiet way.”

For the rest of the afternoon, they played together, correcting each other with soft suggestions, teasing smiles, and laughter whenever they hit a wrong note.

By the time they left the practice room, Clara realized she was already looking forward to tomorrow—to another session, another shared melody, and perhaps, more moments with Liam that made her heart beat a little faster.

As she walked home, she thought about the spark that had started yesterday. It wasn’t fireworks or instant attraction—it was slower, subtler, like the beginnings of a song she wanted to keep playing, note by note.
