Chapter 3
The Competition
The announcement came over the school intercom: Willowbrook Music Academy would hold its annual student recital in two weeks, and students were encouraged to perform in duets or ensembles.
Clara’s stomach fluttered when she heard it. She had only just started connecting with Liam, and now performing together in front of the whole academy felt… terrifying.
Later that afternoon, she found him near the practice rooms, humming softly to himself as he tuned his cello.
“Hey,” she said, trying to sound casual. “Did you hear about the recital?”
Liam looked up, eyes lighting with interest. “Yeah… I was thinking about entering. What about you?”
Clara hesitated. “I… I don’t know. I haven’t played much lately, and performing in front of everyone? It’s scary.”
He smiled gently. “Scary can be good. It pushes you to do more than you think you can. Besides…” His gaze softened. “…we could do it together. Violin and cello, just like yesterday. I think we’d be great.”
Clara’s heart skipped. “You really think so?”
“I know so,” he said firmly. “We’ve got something special when we play together. You’ll see.”
The next few days were filled with long practices, often spilling into late afternoons when the school was quiet.
Mistakes were made, notes clashed, and laughter filled the rooms whenever one of them hit a wrong key or string.
Slowly, their music began to blend perfectly, each note complementing the other, like pieces of a puzzle finding their place.
During one evening practice, Liam paused mid-note and looked at her. “You’re… amazing, you know that?”
Clara felt her cheeks warm. “We’re amazing together,” she corrected softly.
He smiled, a quiet intensity in his eyes. “Yeah… together.”
By the day of the recital, Clara was still nervous, but standing beside Liam, violin ready, she felt a calm confidence she had never known. The slow burn between them had grown stronger, and every glance, every shared breath, made the moment feel like it belonged to just the two of them.
As the first notes of their duet filled the auditorium, Clara realized that sometimes, the smallest challenges—like a recital or a misplayed note—could become the most beautiful moments when shared with the right person.
