Chapter 11
Shadows of Jealousy
The academy’s hallways were alive with chatter as students prepared for the upcoming duet competition. Clara was tuning her violin when she noticed Evan, the confident pianist from before, lingering near Liam, laughing a little too freely.
A small pang of jealousy twisted in Clara’s chest. She shook her head, trying to dismiss it. Liam and Evan were just friends… right?
“Clara!” Liam called, walking over with his usual bright smile. “Ready to rehearse?”
“Yes,” she said, trying to keep her tone neutral, but she couldn’t stop the slight tension in her shoulders.
As they played, Evan’s presence lingered in Clara’s mind. Every glance Liam gave Evan felt charged, even though nothing was wrong. She found herself distracted, missing small notes, and Liam noticed.
“Hey,” he said softly during a pause, “what’s wrong? You’re… off today.”
Clara hesitated, biting her lip. “I… I don’t know. Maybe I’m just tired.”
Liam frowned, unconvinced, but he didn’t press. He returned to the music, letting her settle.
After practice, Liam gently took her hand. “Clara,” he said, his voice quiet but firm, “I promise… you have nothing to worry about. You’re the one I want to play with. You’re the one I—”
Clara looked down, feeling her cheeks warm. She knew she had let her insecurities creep in. “I… I know,” she whispered. “I guess I just… overthink things.”
He smiled, squeezing her hand reassuringly. “We’re a team, remember? We trust each other.”
Clara nodded, heart racing. Even amidst jealousy and doubt, Liam’s presence grounded her. The slow burn between them didn’t vanish—it flickered stronger, fueled by the very moments that tested their trust.
As they left the hall together, side by side, Clara realized that love wasn’t always simple. But with Liam, it felt worth every pang, every shadow, every note.
