Chapter 13
Moonlight Duet
The academy was quiet that evening, the corridors empty and bathed in the pale glow of the moon. Clara had stayed behind to practice a tricky passage, and to her surprise, Liam appeared, cello in hand.
“Thought I’d join,” he said softly, not wanting to startle her. “You looked like you could use a duet partner.”
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. “I… I guess I can’t say no to that.”
They set up in the music room, the soft hum of their instruments blending with the silence of the night.
As they played, the music felt different—more intimate, more vulnerable.
Each note lingered, each glance carried weight, and every accidental brush of hands sent sparks through Clara she couldn’t ignore.
At one point, Liam leaned just slightly closer to read a note, and Clara’s violin wavered. She flushed, trying to steady herself, but the warmth of his presence was overwhelming.
“You okay?” Liam asked quietly, his eyes searching hers.
Clara nodded, even though her heartbeat betrayed her. “Yes… just… tired, maybe.”
He smiled gently. “You’re doing great.”
As they finished the piece, their instruments fading into the quiet night, neither moved to pack up immediately. The air between them was charged, a delicate tension neither wanted to break.
“Clara,” Liam whispered, almost hesitant, “I… I like playing with you like this. Just us.”
Clara’s breath caught. “Me too,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
For a few long moments, they simply sat, letting the silence speak. The slow burn between them had grown hotter, more undeniable, but they both knew this night—like their music—was meant to be savored, not rushed.
Finally, Liam stood, offering his hand to her. “Come on, we should go before someone notices we stayed this late.”
Clara took his hand, her fingers brushing his. The contact was brief, yet it left her heart fluttering. As they left the music room together, the night air felt electric, filled with possibilities neither dared speak aloud—except through the music that had brought them here.
