Chapter 23 I Think I Didn’t Die
I think I didn't die.
I could hear sounds.
When I opened my eyes.
The surgery door swung open. The doctor bowed deeply to Xie Siyan. "I'm sorry. We did everything we could."
Xie Siyan's eyes were bloodshot, stubble covering his jaw.
He clutched Shen Weian and collapsed to the floor.
He sobbed hysterically.
People passed through the hospital corridors.
Life and death were ordinary here.
No one stopped to care whether he had just lost the person he loved most.
I reached out to touch his face.
My hand passed straight through him.
Shen Weian wailed at him. "Mom shouldn't have come back with you! Give me my mom back.
"I want Mom."
Tears spilled down my cheeks before I could stop them.
So even souls could feel pain?
I crouched gently in front of them and whispered, "It's okay. The gods will erase your memories.
"Once you forget, it won't hurt anymore."
I stretched my hand toward him but stopped a few centimeters away.
He wouldn't feel it.
I gave a bitter smile.
Just as I started to pull back, Xie Siyan suddenly lifted his head. Our eyes met.
Then he softly closed his fingers around the empty air.
Right where my fingers had hovered.
His hand shook as he tried to hold on.
"Don't go. Please don't go."
Tears streamed down his face unchecked.
He stubbornly hugged the spot where I had been.
Like a pitiful madman.
Someone seemed to call my name.
"Shen Tingwan. It's time to leave."
I watched him one last time and let out a quiet sigh.
But I still turned back for one final look.
Xie Siyan remained frozen, staring in the direction I had gone.
As if I had never moved from there.
