Chapter 3 The Banquet Corner
I looked at him, puzzled. "Run where?"
Su Qi grinned. "Some small island abroad for a vacation! We go there, cut off from the world for half a month. Ignore everyone, leave all the annoying stuff back in the country! How's that!"
I still had a ton of unused annual leave. Su Qi worked freelance. We could both just… go.
Maybe Chi Wen's engagement news had hit me too hard. For once, his idea actually tempted me a little.
"Come on! You in or not?" Su Qi kept pushing. "Go with me. Just think of it as keeping your brother company."
I thought about it. Then nodded. "Okay."
Su Qi was all action. He pulled out his phone right then, picked a visa-free island, booked the hotel and flights. "We leave the day after tomorrow. Start packing now!"
But pathetic as I was, before we left, I still wanted to see Chi Wen one more time.
I heard he would be at a banquet tonight. So I went.
Just like so many times before, I didn't dare approach him. I hid in a dead corner, scanning quietly for his figure.
Five minutes in, that sculpted, perfect face appeared in my line of sight.
Almost on instinct, I shrank deeper into the shadow.
The moment Chi Wen showed up, people swarmed him. He smiled politely, handling every greeting with ease.
I watched him and drifted off.
I wondered if his fiancée came tonight.
Someone as good as Chi Wen… his fiancée must be so happy.
The more I thought, the worse I felt. I was terrified she would suddenly appear and link arms with him sweetly.
So I decided to slip away before he noticed me.
But bad luck—I got spotted by someone I knew.
I turned. It was Zhu Heng.
Zhu Heng was Su Qi's classmate. He used to come over to our house a lot.
He called out to me as I tried to sneak off. "Dongdong?"
"Zhu Heng." I had to stop and greet him.
He walked over with a smile. "You alone? Su Qi didn't come?"
"Nope." I said. "Just me."
We chatted a bit. He seemed to notice I was itching to leave. "Heading back already?"
I nodded.
"Then let me give you a ride. I have something to do too, so I'm leaving early." Zhu Heng took out his car keys. "I'll just say bye to my friend first. Wait here for me."
"No…" Before I could refuse, he was already walking away.
In that short moment, I realized Chi Wen had disappeared.
I was looking around frantically when a familiar voice came from behind.
"Looking for someone?"
