Floor Work

he house reeks of burned toast and Theo's protein powder.

It's the smell of most mornings since the three of us moved

in together two years ago. Somehow we have yet to develop

the life skills to fix either problem.

We're in a neighborhood that used to be all auto shops and is

now half auto shops and half coffee places that charge six dollars

for a latte with lavender in it. We're close enough to the training

ground that none of us has an excuse to be late, but far enough

from downtown that nobody bothers us while we're buying

groceries on a Tuesday.

"What did the coffee do to you?" Jamie asks, looking up from

his cereal.

I blink. "What?"
