Chapter Six

J

Off the Field

Rafe

amie leaves the house at seven with a muffled farewell

through the wall, leaving me to wallow in silence and self-pity

with the pain in my hip.

The house is different when it's just me in it. I've lived here two

years, and it still catches me off guard sometimes, how empty it can

feel when everyone is out getting busy.

Theo's at his new girlfriend's, and Ozzy hasn't swung by

tonight.

It's cool. I'm used to being alone. I've been alone in hotels in

fourteen countries, in locker rooms after everyone else has gone, in

press conferences where the questions are all about the team and

the answers are all about me. None of that has ever bothered me,

not really.
