Chapter Thirty-Four
Wyatt
When we arrive at the cemetery, an eerie silence greets us. Blair had been so certain this was the place, and we trusted her completely, never pausing to consider the what-ifs. The darkness and stillness make us all uneasy. Then, we hear it—a piercing scream. Kade freezes, his head snapping toward the front doors. He takes a step, but I grip his shoulder firmly, "Stick to the plan."
It's a damn good plan, and if we pull this off, someone will be greatly rewarded. I fight the urge to look at my phone at the cameras to see that she ok. I just got her back- I can’t fucking lose her again. I won’t survive it. Grabbing our guns we make our way to the building.
The men are quiet on their feet, not alerting anyone of our arrival. The screams get louder as we get closer. Kade’s hands start to shake. I look back, Pit leading the other group, and nods slightly when he makes eye contact with me. He signals for the first group to go around to the left and then the other to the right. Pit decides to go right through the fucking front door. I don’t have time to worry about him, Elena is in danger and from the sounds of it, is being tortured. Stuart hasn’t been on the front lines in so long, I’m worried he doesn’t even remember how a gun works. I shake the thought as we walk towards the small patch of woods.
We look around and find the entrance- just where she said it would be. It doesn’t look like it’s been used in a while, the brush around it hasn’t been disturbed either. I reach down and break a path to the door. Kade opens it slowly and it gives easily. We waste no more time and enter. The air smells like old water and dust. The walls are covered in spiderwebs and vines from the bushes outside. Commotion catches our attention for a moment. Our men have entered, firing their guns- breaking the silence. The screams have stopped, hopefully they leave her alone. The cement hallway leads us straight to the door Blair said it would. We enter and turn towards the next door on the right, a single light shines under it.
We wait a moment to listen, it sounds like there are about four men inside and I hear Elena’s small groans. I lock eyes with Kade who nods, and I reach for the handle. He grabs his pistol and I reach for mine behind me. We slowly make our way into the room. As expected, nobody is paying attention this way. Their focus is on the door that they know leads to this room. The gunfire above is powerful and yells from our men are heard. All of them shouting the same question, Where’s the girl? Their guns are drawn and pointed at the doorway. I look around and spot two more men in the back right-hand side. I nod towards them, but Kade’s eyes are hyper-focused on Elena. Her bloodied frail body hangs from the ceiling. Her eyes are closed, and her body is shaking. I can see the fight in his eyes to just go to her, but we have to play this smart. Right now, we have the advantage, and we can easily take these fuckers out. But we need to do that without getting her caught in the crossfire. They are yelling at each other about how they don’t get paid enough to deal with this shit.
We make our way to the other side, unnoticed, and take out the two hiding in the corner like fucking pussies. I slit their throat with my knife, so we can control the situation. Once we set them down, we make our way to Elena. As soon as we get to her someone turns around and shouts. I fire and shoot the one yelling but it’s too late they see us. Kade rushes to her and unhooks her from the ceiling, a bullet grazes his shoulder- but he doesn’t flinch. I shoot the one that is aimed at him, and he goes down. Two left, but they are flanking us. He holds her close and whispers something in her ear. My gun is aimed at the two walking in circles around us.
“Did you really think you could fucking save her? She will be his and there is nothing you can do about it,” he is looking right at me and I know he’s not talking about Elena.
“I bet he did, I guess the dumb fuck doesn’t know we have people on the inside. Guess you do now, huh?” the other says.
He aims and shoots directly at Kade’s head. I fired without thinking and put a bullet between his eyes. I turn and spot the next one who is now running out of the room. I fire but it misses, and he slams the door shut.
“We need to….”
“KADE?” Elena’s voice rings through the silence in the room.
I turn and find Kade lying face-first on the ground with blood pouring from his head. I feel the blood drain from my face.
“No! Kade! Please! Please get up! Kade please!” She’s bleeding, hurt, and it looks like her arm is broken but she still manages to turn him over .
“No! You can’t leave me! Please! Wake up, Kade, please! I need you. I love you. You can’t do this to me,” her cry of anguish is deafening.
I can’t believe what I am seeing. I can’t process this right now- Elena needs to get out of here. I need to get her to safety before they come back. I look once more at my brother on the floor and make the decision I never thought I would have to make. Elena’s screaming and slapping his chest, I bend down and pick her up. She claws at my face and struggles against me.
“Elena, I’m sorry. We have to go; we have to get you out of here.”
“You let them shoot him! You fucking let him die!” She stops struggling as her body gives out.
“I hate you,” her weak voice sounds like bombs going off in my head.
The last thing she says before she passes out is how it’s all my fault. My fault.
