WELL SHIT

Well this is it. I’m having a real life baby.

I’m sat on the edge of my hospital bed in a lovely surgical gown, you know the ones that open at the back showing your arse.

In my case it’s showing my massive lard arse and you know all those celebrity mums that just grow this cute little baby bump?

Well they can just go fuck themselves. I mean not only has my stomach rounded but so has my face, my arse and even my bloody feet.

I swear I am just one fat round beach ball.

“Miss Smith,” a nurse calls. I look up and she smiles. “We are ready for you now.”

“Woohoo, let’s get this show on the road,” Bella sings, jumping up from the chair. She’s wearing scrubs and has been sat there posing as she posted selfies on her Instagram with the hashtag, #hotdoctoralert. I’m just hoping no one actually thinks she’s a doctor and asks her for medical advice.

I stand and take a deep breath to steady my nerves as Bella puts her arm around my shoulders. “Come on, it’s exciting. All will be fine and you’ll soon be a mother!!” she says giving me a squeeze.

“That isn’t helping,” I point out.

“What? That you’re about to become a mother? Because I’m not sure what you thought was going to happen. I mean it had to come out eventually.” She shrugs.

“I know that, it’s just what if I’m shit at it, what if the baby hates me? Or worse, what if the baby is ugly and I can’t love it because it is too ugly?” I ask panicked.

Bella laughs and slaps my bare arse hard, making me jump. “Oww! What was that for?” I ask rubbing my cheek.

“That was what is needed for you to suck it up and get the fuck in there and have this baby. You’re having a c-section which means you don’t have to push a watermelon through your vagina!

” she exclaims. “You will keep that nice and neat vagina; no saggy flaps, no saloon doors, no spam danglers. Just a cute little coochie.”

The nurse who is stood waiting for me lets out a laugh. “If it helps, your friend is right.”

I sigh, shaking my head. “Fine, let’s do this.”

“Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Bella smiles and links her arm through mine before leading me down to theatre.

After I was jabbed with a ridiculously long needle in my spine, I swear I was scared to even breathe with that thing approaching.

But thankfully all is fine and I’m now led down and the curtain thingy is across me, stopping me from seeing what it is they’re doing.

Bella is sat by my head, holding my hand tightly in hers.

“Okay Miss Smith, we are going to start now. You’ll feel some tugging and rummaging around but no pain,” the doctor says, smiling. Well, I think he’s smiling. It’s hard to tell with him wearing a mask.

“Tell me Doctor. What made you decide to become a doctor working in this field?” Bella asks softly.

I look to her frowning, thinking this is not the time for questions. I want him fully focused while he’s slicing my stomach open.

“Well, I didn’t choose this specifically. I just found my way here,” he answers while looking at Bella.

Bella lets out a girly giggle, one that I’ve never heard her do before. I frown as she twirls a strand of her hair. “Wow, I bet you have some stories to tell.”

“What the fuck!” I hiss at her but she ignores me.

“There are a few stories yes,” he states, winking at her.

Bella does that girlie laugh again. “Seriously people, I am about to have a goddamn baby here. You have a blade in your hand ready to cut into my stomach Doctor. If you are interested in my friend here, she is available, and may I add she is a little kinky and a sure thing.” The doctor raises his eyebrows at my statement.

“Hey, I am not a sure thing,” Bella snaps.

I give her a glare but she just smiles and shrugs. “Alright, fair cop gov.”

“Doc, she will give you her number but in the meantime, can you just control your desire to chat up my friend until after you have birthed my baby successfully?” I suggest. He nods his head and I think he is feeling a little embarrassed being called out by myself.

The doctor starts the c-section and it feels bizarre, almost like he is looking for his keys inside a big handbag, aka my stomach. “Okay Miss Smith, here comes your baby,” the doctor sings happily.

Bella squeezes my hand tight

and the room suddenly fills with the sound of a screaming baby. “Holy cow, that’s a noise.” Bella laughs.

“Congratulations Mum, it’s a girl!” the doctor says as he holds up my baby girl.

“Oh my god, she is perfect.” I sob looking at this tiny, angry baby screaming the room down. They take her away. “Where are you taking her?” I ask.

“Just to weigh her and wrap her up. Don’t worry, you’ll have a hold of her soon,” the nurse says softly.

I watch them as they weigh and wrap her up.

The nurse brings her over to me and lays her across my chest. “Here you go Mum, your beautiful 7lb 6oz baby girl.” I can’t stop the tears from falling as a huge wave of love pours from me as I look at my beautiful daughter.

She has stopped crying and is just laying there peacefully with her little wrinkled hands poking up from the blanket.

“So, what are you going to name her?” Bella asks.

“Hope,” I choke with emotion as I stroke my finger down her little cheek.

“I like it, she is definitely a Hope,” Bella says. The nurse comes over and hands Hope to her as they stitch me up. “Hey Hope, I am your Auntie Bella. I will be the fun one. You can tell me anything you can’t tell your mum because I’m so much cooler than her,” she states.

I don’t argue with her. No doubt she will be the cool aunt and I want Hope to feel like she will always have someone to talk to.

I know in that moment that my life is going to change. My life and my dreams are no longer what is important. I love Hope more than any dreams of singing. I want to strive to be the best mum I can and I will support her no matter what she decides unlike my parents.

My life has taken a turn I didn’t expect; one I didn’t plan and I couldn’t be fucking happier.
