Chapter 2
Chapter Two
The smile fades from my lips the moment I turn the corner.
Something’s wrong.
The city usually speaks to me. Three centuries of walking the streets taught me how to listen—to the distant sirens, the pulse of nightlife, the rhythm of countless human heartbeats. Tonight, beneath all of it, there’s another sound. A silence.
Stopping beneath a flickering streetlamp, the taste of Lena's blood still a sweet, coppery warmth on my tongue. My body’s humming with satisfaction, a pleasant ache settling between my thighs from our frantic coupling against the brick wall.
She was exquisite, her fear melting into a desperate hunger that matched my own.
The memory of her gasps as I sank my fangs into her shoulder, her inner walls clamping around my fingers as I drank her climax is enough to make me want to go back for seconds.
But this feeling... this is different.
I close my eyes, pushing the memory of Lena's writhing body aside to focus. There. A heartbeat I hadn't heard in decades. Slow, steady, and ancient.
My eyes snap open. "No," I whispered, the word a cold puff of air in the night.
The last time I'd heard a heartbeat like that, entire kingdoms still stood where modern cities now sprawl. The last time I'd heard it, I'd been running for my life, my own heart a frantic drum against my ribs as I fled the carnage of my making.
A shadow detached itself from the rooftop across the street. The figure stood at the edge of the building, black coat stirring in the wind like a funeral shroud. It wasn't the silhouette I recognized. This was something older, something that had no business in my city, my territory.
I felt something I hadn't experienced in a very long time. It wasn't the thrill of the hunt, or the possessive pride of claiming a new lover. It was a cold, sharp spike of pure, undiluted fear.
Back in the alley, my sweet Lena finally pushed herself away from the brick wall.
Her thoughts were hazy, tangled in the web of pleasure and pain I'd woven around her, I’m sure.
The marks on her neck and shoulder were already fading, thanks to my venom, but the one I'd deliberately seared into her skin below her collarbone would last. It was my claim, a brand of ownership that pulsed with a faint, dark magic.
She should have gone home, back to her safe, mundane life.
Instead, she found herself staring at the spot where I'd disappeared, her fingers unconsciously rising to touch the new mark on her skin. I feel her emotions and see what she’s seeing as if it were me.
She touches it and winces. The shape looks almost like a crescent moon wrapped around a single black eye. The moment her fingertips brush it, a vision slams into her. Dark water. An endless abyss. A mansion beneath the ocean floor. And a voice, my voice, whispers into her very soul.
Find her before they do.
Lena gasps and stumbles backward, the vision vanishing as quickly as it came. But the mark remains, a dark promise against her pale skin. A beacon. And I had just lit the fuse.
Miles away, hidden beneath the city itself, in a stone chamber that reeked of old blood and older secrets, dozens of candles suddenly extinguish. An elderly woman looks up from a table covered in maps and old photographs, her eyes, milky with age, suddenly sharp.
"The mark has awakened," she says, her voice dry as dust.
Around her, hooded figures exchange uneasy glances.
"After all this time?" one asks, the voice young and tremulous.
The woman nods, her gaze fixed on a photograph of a grinning girl with dark curls. "And Del has found the girl."
Silence settles over the room, thick and heavy.
Finally, someone spoke. "Then the Commanders will find them both."
Above the city, thunder rolled across the night sky, a deep, menacing growl.
I look up, then back at the rooftop. The shadow is gone. The silence remains. And for the first time in centuries, I realize I’m no longer the hunter. I’m being hunted. And I just made my beautiful, innocent Lena the most delicious bait in the city.
A grim smile touches my lips. Let them come. They have no idea what they’re walking into. But first, I had to get my girl to safety. Or at least, to my version of it. I melt back into the shadows, my senses straining, my body thrumming with a new kind of hunger—the hunger to protect what was mine.
