Chapter 32
Okay, don't murder me for the fight scene. I've never wrote a fight scene that didn't happen in an octogon lol. Also this chapter is a little shorter than the one's I've been posting lately so I apologize for that.
She happily rushed out of my office to hurry and meet the group that would go aid the 4th district warriors.
I had half a mind not to bring Alexandra since Cassie was coming.
The only problem with that was she had proved herself in the last fight and I couldn’t sideline her just because she was a female.
I wanted to keep the support group small but strong. Aside from the one’s I told Cassie to stay near, I informed the 4th and 5th in the blood pack. Alexandra, Avery, and Dante.
“If my sister goes, I’m going too.” I shook my head as the conversation that was being held while I was mindlinking became clear.
“I appreciate your help from the breech we had a month ago. I’m also thankful she has a brother that looks out for her. But I can’t mindlink you.”
“I can!” Cassie quickly piped in, raising her hand.
With a sigh I just threw my hands up. There was no time to aruge now. “Fine. Just hurry up. We don’t have time.” I bit out as I pushed past them to go outside.
“Aeak!!” My men said in unison as I stepped outside.
“There is another attack in the 4th district. I want this handled quickly. No mercy. No prisoners. Understand?”
“Imdarksud, rang through the air as they made their way towards the woods. “One last thing...” I didn’t want to keep them but they had to know.
“Luna and her brother will be coming along. Don’t kill him and watch out for her.” They all nodded in agreement.
“Mason’s coming too.” This was not happening. What did I do in a past life to have to deal with both of these females now? We are going to have a long good talk when we come back. That’s for sure.
Without another word I followed my men to the forest to shift. Cassie and her brother darted past us.
“Cassie. Get back now.” I tried to be stern instead of livid but I’m sure it seeped through. Within a klick, she was in my sights again.
I know she’s excited but I like to have order when we go out like this. “I know you’re new but there is an order. Me and Brett take the lead. The warriors follow after us. Then the blood pack follows. Got it?”
She blew air at me through her nose. Good. That means she got it.
The 4th district was 167 miles away from home. It took about 3 hours to get there by car. But we had made it in 50 minutes hauling ass and skipping traffic.
Hearing the screams and smelling the smoke filled air, we all felt an urgency to push even faster.
As soon as we broke the forest line, I caught a wolf by the neck and tore a chunk away, leaving the wolf to bleed out.
“Go!” I yelled through mindlink as I searched for the next wolf.
Seeing V rip out the wolfs neck made the bile in my stomach rise up, making me sick. He really meant no mercy. Nick, Alexandra, and Mason looked just as shocked as I did.
“Luna. Don’t stand in one place.” Boss was right. I need to move.
I ran nowhere in particular, frantically looking left and right. My ears only picked up the piercing screams, crackling of fire, and howls of pain. I tried to focus but it was all too much.
I was stunned when I felt my side throb in pain. A wolf had collided with me. Rolling a few times together, I tried to get the top position.
Before our roll came to an end another wolf jumped on me, their paws landing directly on my chest. I gasped for air as the assault had literally knock all the air out of me.
He snapped his jaw down at me, trying to grab my neck. I moved swiftly out of the way making him hit his snout on the ground hard.
He pulled back and shook his head to try and ease the pain. I took the opportunity to kick the wolf off with my hind legs as hard as I could. I watched him crush into one of the few buildings that weren’t set ablaze.
Getting up, I took a deep breath to get much needed oxygen back to my lungs. The pain that radiated on my right side made me hunch over to ride it out.
In my current state, I didn’t notice the first wolf getting back up. Without warning he took a hold of my right hind leg and tugged me back towards him.
I didn’t want to show pain so I held in my yelp. Looking around for anything to help, I found it in the most unlikely of places. I dropped to the ground as the second wolf jumped, missing me and taking out his own ally.
After the crash I jumped on the second wolf and bit down on his neck until he relaxed, accepting his fate. The only problem is I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t rip out his throat as I just witnessed V do moments ago.
“Luna.” I’ve never felt so relieved to hear Smiley in my life. I let go of the wolf’s neck and stepped away. Smiley took my place and motioned me west with his head.
“Thank you.” He nodded once before he had the wolf’s neck in his mouth. I quickly turned and ran so I didn’t have to witness that again.
I saw the trail of bodies that Smiley created to come and help me. I stopped to catch my breath.
This all seemed like too much. Is this what V does regularly? Is this why he’s so feared and angry? Could this be one of the causes of his nightmares?
“Kay. You okay?” No I wasn’t. V was right. I’m a weak American wolf. I couldn’t kill any of these wolves.
“Where is the blood coming from? V is going to freak when he sees you.” Only Brett would break out of war mode to make me more comfortable.
“You don’t have to kill them. It’s not like you listen to V anyways.” This was a brilliant point. “Stay by me and let’s finish this up.”
Brett started a slow jog to make sure I could keep up with my leg. I could, so he started to run.
I wished I didn’t follow him when I witnessed Alexandra getting pinned to the ground. Brett swore as he ran to help. Where was Mason?
A red wolf with a patch of black on his chest blocked my path so I couldn’t assist Brett.
I gave off a warning growl that he ignored. Within a blink of an eye, Nick was by my side glaring down at the wolf.
His over confident demeanor disappeared but he wasn’t backing down.
“I get high, you get low?”
“I jump higher.” I challenged him.
“Fine brat.” He’ll pay for that later. Only V could call me brat.
Since Nick took low, he attacked first. His attack was a brazen claw to the face but he almost had his paw caught in the red wolfs mouth in a counter.
Losing his patience, Nick bum rushed the wolf. Neither went down and they just growled at each other as I slowly circled around.
Being the high, I had to find my opening and take it. With a few more steps I saw my opening.
I ran as fast as I could before I leaped up and landed on the wolf’s back, taking the back of his neck into my mouth.
He struggled and fought to buck me off but I just gripped my teeth tighter to hold on. I closed my eyes to try and get the disgusting taste of blood out of my mouth.
When he finally went down with a heave, I looked around to see who was still around and how many wolves were left to be dealt with.
Watching V and Brett fight side by side was mesmerizing. They were so in tune with each other, like they were the same person.
Every hair stood to attention as I smelled a familiar scent from special tactics class. Gun powder. I quickly looked around to see where the humans were but I couldn’t find any. I couldn’t catch their fruity smell either.
Trying to hone in on the gun power proved to be futile as a shot rang out through the air.
My breath caught in my throat as Brett bellowed in pain. I couldn’t understand why he transformed back to his human form. His wolf could handle a bullet better than his human form could.
The thoughts fled as the next pain filled screamed reached my ears.
I ran as fast as I could to Brett. I didn’t even care he was naked. My family was writhing in pain.
He grabbed his stomach even though you could clearly see the bullet wound in his arm.
Hunching over he turned his head to vomit up blood and I panicked. V was barking orders but I didn’t hear anything.
Cold hands grabbed my face and I jerked away. “Cassie. You need to shift back and get to the house.” With no memory of shifting, I looked at my right hand that was covered with Brett’s blood. I looked at how he held onto my hand with all his might. I couldn’t shift and leave him alone.
“I won’t.”
“Cassie.”
“He’s my family! My brother! I won’t leave him!” I knew me and Brett were close since he helped me navigate V when we weren’t on good terms but it seemed to run deeper than that.
“I’m not asking you to. You can’t carry him in your human form and you damn sure can’t run as fast.” V was right. I took in a deep breath as tears left my eyes involuntarily.
Shakily I stood up, letting my hold go as I shifted to my wolf. V and Greggor lifted Brett onto my back as his cries of agony still filled the air.
”I’ll be right behind you.”It eased my mind a little to know that Nicky would be trailing behind me.
“Go.” That was all I needed to hear from V.
I took off like a bat out of hell. I had no plans to stop or slow down for anyone or anything.
We made great time and all was going well until we were in the yard in front of the house. My legs finally gave out on me and I went crashing into the ground with Brett.
Whining I tried to get back up, to ignore the burning in my lungs, and force feeling back into my legs but they couldn’t hold my weight anymore.
“I got him!” Nick yelled as he ran past me in human form to pick Brett up and carry him into the house.
I dropped my head on my paws with a sigh. I’m so glad Nick was there to pick up where I left off. I felt a thousand times better knowing Brett was with Dr. Billings.
Lying for a while to catch my breath, I tried to get up again. That’s when I realized my injured leg is what gave out on me. The searing pain that shot up my leg had we grounded once again. I wanted nothing more than to go be by Brett’s side.
After we finished up in the 4th district we all ran as fast as we could back to the house. I was worried about Brett but I was worried about Cassie too. She was close to him and Smirk, Smile, or whatever the hell she called him, said she had been hurt in her fight.
I slowly came to a stop before shifting and walking over to my mate that was laying in the middle of the lawn.
“What hurts?”
“My leg doesn’t want to work. I need to go check on Brett though.” I nodded my head at her. We all need to go check on Brett.
I picked her up bridal style and walked into the house. She practically threw a fit when I went up the first flight of stairs.
“This is not the way to the infirmary!”
“No. It’s the way to get you at least a shirt. I’m sure it will be awkward for everyone there, including Brett, if you come in fully naked.” She glared at me but I kept going anyways.
Right before we made it to our door I felt her body heat up. Worried that she might be going through her heat, I placed my hand to her head. Thankfully she was just blushing.
“Shirt.” She demanded of me. I would let this go since she’s had a hard day.
We all did but I know she isn’t used to this and for Brett to get hurt only makes it worse.
I threw her one of my long sleeves shirts that practically goes down to her knees. She put it on and I put on a pair of pajama bottoms before we walked back down to the infirmary.
Cassie buried her face in my chest as we saw Brett wired to every machine possible. It didn’t even look like the bullet wound was the problem.
“Are you okay?” I asked her as I stroked her hair to try and sooth her.
She cleared her throat as she looked up at me. “Can you put me down in the chair next to him?”
I started to walk over to Brett’s bed and it literally made my chest heavier to walk closer and see how bad he really was.
I placed her down in the chair and she took his hand. I walked over to Dr. Billings, unable to take my eyes off Brett.
“What happened to him?” I asked devoid of emotions.
Dr. Billings held up a bullet. “This happened. A simple bullet doesn’t cause the symptoms he had. Going on a hunch I had, we found out that the bullet has traces of wolfsbane inside.”
I looked at the doctor completely confused. “Are you saying-“
“I think that someone is weaponizing wolfsbane and Brett was the live test.”
This had to be a joke. Who the hell would weaponize that shit? Was it the humans?
Everything was swirling in my head and I started to get sick. What if they had shot Cassie instead?
Greggor grabbed onto my arm as he pulled me towards a chair to sit down. “Calm down. Don’t over think things. We’ll get to the bottom of this.”
After I was in a chair he forced my head in my lap like I was going through a panic attack. Maybe I was. I don’t even know anymore.
All I know is my beta is fighting for his life and that could be my mate in his place.
“What’s wrong?” Cassie asked with even more fear laced in her voice than before.
Great. Now I was adding onto the problem as well. I leaned up and gave her the best smile I could.
“I’m fine. I’m just trying to find out who shot Brett with wolfsbane.”
“So it wasn’t a silver bullet.”
“That is a myth my dear girl. Silver only works in Hollywood. Wolfsbane is pretty damn bad though.” I was ready to punch Dr. Billings in his throat. We were supposed to make her feel better. Not worry her more.
Greggor quickly held me down by my shoulders as Dr. Billings began to talk again. “Good thing Brett has me. I just have to monitor his breathing and heartbeat to make sure it’s as it should be as it eventually passes. Then he’ll be good as new.”
Cassie smiled as she squeezed Brett’s hand a little tighter.
“Doc you need to check her out too. She can’t use her right leg and she might be a little banged up.” If looks could kill, I’d be 18 feet under. She’d have killed me three times over. Oh well.
Dr. Billings started by inspecting her leg. “That is a nasty cut. It’s amazing you could run all the way back carrying Brett. That’s probably how you tore your Achilles tendon. That will need surgery to make sure it heals properly and I’ll need to do that as soon as possible.”
She looked at me wide eyed and I couldn’t even offer support. I was as freaked out as she was. We only had surgery to remove bullet or other foreign objects, not injuries.
“Let me finish the examination in case anything else needs to be done.” She just looked at me as I watched Dr. Billings intently.
He was going to take off her shirt. “I wouldn’t do that.” I warned him. With a sigh he just started his examination over the shirt.
He was feeling around her abdomen when she let out a yelp. Greggor pushed me back down as I felt my wolf fighting to come to the surface.
“This will hurt a little but I need to check okay?” She nodded her head as she bit her lip and turned to look away.
Dr. Billings touched more intently on her right ribs as she would contort her face in pain. I didn’t like seeing her in pain and my wolf was raging.
“Okay. It’s just bruised thankfully. It will probably be healed up by the time you wake up from the surgery.”
“You’re doing it now?!” I barked at the doctor.
“Yes now. I want to make sure she can walk again.” I couldn’t argue with that. I wanted her to be fine. She risked herself for Brett.
“I’ll be fine.” She said to me calmly.
Opening her arms, I knew she wanted me to come to her. Greggor actually let me get up from my seat as I walked over to her and picked her up to cradle her near my chest. “You’ll be fine ruqa. We’ll be waiting for you.”
There was a loud booming coming from the hallway. Cassie sighed as she looked at the door. “He’s my brother. I had to tell him.”
Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who was a raging lunatic over her. “Do you want him in here?”
She nodded and I put her down before walking to the door. I looked at my first in the blood pack as he stared down Cassie’s brother.
“Let him in.” They still glared at each other as my warrior allowed him to step around him. “She’s waiting for you.”
He went to step around me as well when he stopped. “Thank you.” Without another word between us he continued to see Cassie.
I know we didn't get to see everyone fight but I didn't want to drag a fight scene on through the whole chapter.
We'll hear bits from Alexandra's POV in the next chapter when she's talking to Cassie who is bed ridden for a day (the horror.)
Also don't worry about her apprehension to fighting in this chapter.
She's still growing and I wanted to show that.
Last thing. I wanted to thank you all for your reads, votes, and comments. It means a lot that you support this book. I only wrote it because I wanted something different on wattpad for werewolves lol.
