Chapter 33
Extremely sorry about the late update.
I'm running on very low sleep and I can promise this will probably have some mistakes.
I will go over the chapter Friday (my day off yay!) Hope you like it.
Also I want to thank xenomorphiusfor the awesome cover. I love it! \\^o^//
Light snoring is what caused the end of my amazing sleep. I tried to stretch out my arms but hit a hard object really close to me. Grabbing the object and squeezing a little proved it to be another body.
With a groggy groan, I rolled over to come face to face with my brother. I sighed as I looked at him curled into a ball with his right hand entwined with my left. I should have known he would climb in bed with me like he always did when we were sick.
Smiling at his still sleeping form, I forced myself into the upright position and saw V sitting at the foot of Brett’s bed.
His anxiety about the situation was evident. Even his slightly hunched demeanor showed he had a soft spot for his Beta.
“He’s going to be fine.” I don’t know if I said it to help ease his anxiety or my own.
V forced a smile on his face as he hesitantly turned his gaze to me. “And how are you doing?”
I crossed my arms across my chest and held myself. “Okay I guess. Can I walk yet?”
“No. Dr. Billings said you are to be glued to that bed for a day at least.” I’m sure V was surprised that I didn’t fight about it.
To be honest I had no plans on leaving Brett’s side anytime soon.
Suddenly V was on his feet making his way towards the door. “Where are you going?”
“I want to find out what happened to him. Since you’re awake, you can watch him for me.”
“I smelled gun powder.” I told him. He quickly turned to face me as I kept explaining to him. “Before Brett was shot, I smelt gun powder.”
“Was it humans?” He asked as he slowly walked back into the room and closer to me.
I shook my head. I know for a fact that I didn’t smell a human. It had to be another wolf.
“Was Brett their target?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t see who did it. Since both your wolves are black…” I trailed not liking where my mind was taking me to.
The room grew silent with my last sentence and I knew V was busy thinking. “Stay here.” V bit out before he quickly left the room.
Shortly after Dr. Billings came rushing in with Ted trailing behind.
“Take a blood sample. Tell Carissa to rush that.” Ted didn’t even acknowledge Dr. Billings orders as he just assembled his instruments.
Nick stirred as the added commotion seemed to disturb his sleep. I didn’t want him to wake up just yet in case he didn’t sleep well.
V stood a good distance away from everyone as Dr. Billings began to pull away the covers exposing Brett’s bare chest. The doctor inched it down slowly, in an attempt to not inflict anymore pain.
When the cover was at his waist I couldn't help but suck in a breath of air and cover my mouth. His whole stomach had bruised and it seemed to be growing right before us.
My mate couldn’t contain the rumbling of his wolfs anger as he looked on.
“Is this normal?” I asked not knowing anything about wolfsbane or its effects.
“No.” V said through gritted teeth.
“It seems you were right. This wolfsbane is modified in some way. Ted, take two more vials for me as well.” He ordered over his shoulder as he continued to inspect Brett.
“What are you going to do?” I asked. Worry slowly taking over my body.
Dr. Billings was a very confident man. To see that confidence waver seriously struck a nerve in me.
Nick shot up bewildered looking around before focusing on me. “What’s wrong?”
Drawing a blank on words I just pointed to Brett. Nick’s eyes followed until they landed on Brett's bruised chest. They quickly snapped back to me.
“What happened?
“We don’t know. Dr. Billings will find out though.” I looked over at V for confirmation. “Right?”
“If anyone can do it, it’s him.”
Boss stormed into the room and my brother’s face turned into a scowl. With a slap to his arm I mean mugged the hell out of him. “Now isn’t the time.”
I heard about their little incident before I had the surgery done yesterday.
Nick just hunched over like a chastised child as I listened to V and Boss’s conversation.
“Ghost stays. Everyone else is pairing up to visit the neighboring packs. This wasn’t the first attack and I want to see how this weapon has developed. “
“Yes Alpha.” Boss bowed to V before walking over to my bed.
He patted the top of my blankets where my shins were. “Get well Luna. We miss you already.” With a smile he quickly exited the room to do as V instructed.
Ted had finished taking his samples and handed two to Dr. Billings before rushing out of the room as well.
“I’ll go get to work. Call me if anything changes.” He looked blatantly at me before walking out of the infirmary.
After Dr. Billings departure I just stared at V. He just stood there completely frozen.
“I’ll be back.” He stated to no one in particular before leaving the room.
That left me and Nick alone with a still unconscious Brett. Nick put his arm around my shoulder in an attempt to comfort me. Or moment was ruined when the infirmary doors were slammed open.
“My baby is awake!” Alexandra pushed Nicole out of the way so she could walk in.
“This is what you hang out with at school?” Alexandra pointed a thumb over her shoulder at Nicole who was flabbergasted by the comment.
“I take offense to that!” Nicole yelled still standing in the doorway.
Alexandra shrugged as she sat at the foot of my bed. “How you holding up?”
“Fine. Brett isn’t as lucky.” Alexandra didn’t even glance in his direction.
“I heard.” Her tone was emotionless, like she was trying not to think of it.
“Where’s Mason?” I decided to change the conversation. “He went back. Our date had to take a rain check.”
“Date?” Nicole piped in. I forgot she was here.
The love sick puppy look in her eyes let me know she was drooling over my brother. That’s just too weird.
“Yeah. With her mate.” I put a lot of emphasis on the word mate.
I know my brother doesn’t know his mate but I feel like I can tell who it isn’t. It isn’t Raven and it isn’t Nicole either.
“You know he saved my ass yesterday.” Alexandra broke my train of thought with her sudden insertion.
The memory of Alexandra getting pinned to the ground flashed through my mind. “Where was Mason?” I really wanted to know since yesterday.
“I don’t know. I didn’t want to fight near him. He kept interfering and treating me like a baby.” I was so glad that V wasn’t like that.
“I was holding my own until that wolf. He was so much stronger and battle adept than the others, than me. No matter what I did he anticipated it. When he had me pinned I thought it was over.” I couldn’t imagine how scared she must have been in that moment.
“That’s when I saw a dark shadow. Next thing I know the wolf flew off of me.”
The shadow had to be Brett. Those black wolves look exactly like rogue shadows when they’re in action.
“He had already killed the wolf before I could get back up. I nodded to show my appreciation before I took off. Not too long after I heard the shot.”
The moment she said it I heard the shot in my head. Sadly I remembered it vividly.
“You fought warriors?” I thought Nicole was asking Alexandra but she was asking me. “Yeah I’m a warrior. I need to fight.”
“No. You’re our Luna. We need you to be safe. I can’t believe Alpha let you fight.”
“You don’t trust us to protect our Luna?” The dark mood that filled the air scared even me.
Slowly raising my head to the door, Ghost intercepted my line of vision. He wasn’t pleased and the fact that he rarely talks means that he was bothered by Nicole’s statement.
“Not that but-“
“There is no but. I protect my Luna with my life. If she wishes to fight, she can fight.” Nicole nodded silently, probably a little afraid of Ghost.
Ghost ran his hand through his hair like V does when he’s agitated before he left out of the room again. These boys get worked up so easily.
“I’ll take the 9th and go to the Darken Woods Pack.”
“Alpha. Maybe I should-“I cut him off since I was annoyed. “You will go to the Hidden Falls Pack as I instructed.” He slightly bowed his head and took off.
There was no reason to team up the strongest. I could handle them if things went askew.
“Alpha.” My 9th simply stated. “We’re driving.”
We couldn’t run there. When you stepped foot near the Darken Woods Pack, it better be your human form. Otherwise they will assume your visit is an attack. We don’t want that.
I just wanted to see if they had a wolf that exhibited Brett’s symptoms.
The whole drive I couldn’t get my mind off the fact that we had a spy amongst us. Did they help orchestrate this attack? Brett was right. We need to plug the leak as soon as possible.
“Alpha.” I watched as half a dozen males approached the car. So they picked up the intimidation tactics from the European wolves. Too bad they didn’t know I was born and bred there.
I got out of the car and slowly approached the men before they broke apart to reveal their Alpha who was smiling back at me. “Easy boys. You’re not going to intimidate this one.”
With a smirk he slapped my shoulder. “Are we here to talk about the ceremony?” He asked with a smile.
I'm not too happy about how excited he is about meeting my mate, but I also know that this doesn't happen often so some wolves tend to get excited.
“No. I’m here to ask a question.” He shrugged, obviously disinterested in anything else.
“Did you have a warrior that was injured by a human bullet?” The Alpha’s face turned dark instantly. “What do you know about it?”
“My Beta was shot yesterday. I think your warrior might have been a test.”
He scoffed before his stare turned into a glare. “And why would they test a weapon on my warrior for your Beta?”
“It was meant for me.” I stated plainly.
All emotion and color drained from his face. If there was a target on my back it was probably on his as well.
“Come along if you want to see him.” He said dryly as he started to walk back in the direction he came from.
Knowing that I wasn’t going to get a better invitation then that, I followed after him. I kept my guard up the whole way until I stepped into a bright room illuminated with florescent lighting.
The alpha just motioned his head towards the bed and I slowly inched closer.
His warrior was worse off than Brett was. The permanent grimace on his face showed he was in constant pain. Even with his covers pulled up I could see his protruded abdomen.
“When was he shot?” I asked curious to know how long we had until Brett was tis bad.
“A month ago. We’ve had him in here since. Not even his mate knows he’s here.”
That was good to hear. The attacker probably assumed that the warrior had met his demise. This means that both the warrior and Brett had a fighting chance to pull through.
“What have you been doing?”
“Just medicating him to ease the pain but they aren’t working anymore. Our doctor thinks his organs are swelling. It won’t be long until they burst.”
“Do you mind if my doctor comes?”
“If you think it will help.” I nodded as I tried to think of the best way to warn him about Dr. Billings.
“Don’t panic when he gets here.” I quickly added.
He looked over to me with a raised eyebrow. “He’s not one of those damn spirituals is he?” He scrunched his face up in disgust like he smelt a bad odor.
“No.” I stated plainly.
He was much worse. Most wolves didn’t like or trust humans. In Dr. Billing’s case, he was our best bet so this alpha had better learn quickly.
After Ghost’s outburst we all sat in silence. I still couldn’t believe this all happened. I was still looking at Brett when Dr. Billings burst through the door. “I think I know what’s wrong.”
He was rushing over to Brett and Ted seemed as confused as the rest of us. “What is it?”
I didn’t understand why he wasn’t telling us if he knew. Without answering me he grabbed Brett’s left hand and picked it up, turning his palm up towards the ceiling. It had a pink hue to it, and not the cute blush color pink either. Pink that looks unnatural to human skin.
“It’s as I thought.”
“What?!” I yelled completely annoyed by the situation and frustrated that he wasn’t talking.
“This wolfsbane was modified with Mercury. He has all the signs of mercury and wolfsbane poisoning. However the mercury poisoning is slowly deteriorating his body, causing more problems. We’ll have to cure that first before his body naturally heals from the wolfsbane.
” I was so relieved to hear that he knew what was wrong.
“So what do you have to do?”
“That’s the tricky part…” I didn’t feel comforted by his tone. “He needs chelation. It isn’t easy and I can’t perform it alone.”
I knew he was telling me this because Ted wouldn’t be enough or he didn’t have the knowledge to help. Brett would have to go to a human hospital if we wanted to save him.
“I know you don’t like making decisions against your mates wishes but-“ Dante rushed into the room. “Alpha requests your presence. He found another wolf that was injured a month ago.”
Dr. Billings eyes grew wide as he quickly followed after Dante. “Ted. Stay here and try to keep the Beta out of pain while I’m gone.” Ted nervously nodded his head as the doctors figured disappeared from sight.
Ted looked at us nervously before he just shifted his weight between his two feet. He was always shy.
“Don’t worry Teddy. We don’t bite.” I smile at him as I gesture him towards me with my hand.
Cautiously he came over and Nick got off of my bed to stand across from me. Patting the spot that was now open for Ted, I waited for him to come around and sit down.
“What’s bothering you?”
“Just a little worried. I’ve never been left alone with a patient.” I smiled sweetly at him.
Ted is literally the cutest thing ever. We might be the same age but he’s got a genuine innocence about him that no one could hate.
“If he left you alone he trusts you.”
“I know.” Ted dropped his head and sighed. “I’m just worried I will screw up you know. I don’t want to let him down.”
“You can’t. He wouldn’t trust you if you couldn’t do the job, right?”
“Well yeah but I’m not as good as my dad.” I blinked a few times in confusion. Dr. Billings was Ted’s dad? Ted realized what he said and looked at me in horror.
“Was I not supposed to know?”
“Well no. I just…I let my dad tell people usually.” So Ted was a half breed. I so couldn’t tell the difference in his smell, not that it mattered to me.
“Don’t worry about it Teddy bear. I won’t say a word.” I said pulling my fingers across my lips to simulate a zipper.
Ted smiled as he nodded his head. “I should go check on Brett to make sure he’s okay. Thanks Luna.”
Is this chapter too confusing? I wanted to write it longer but my eyes aren't cooperating with me. Let me know if you're lost or I need to clarify something. Thanks for the love as always.
Also don't freak if you notice me creeping on your page. I like to see what my readers write and put on their profiles :)
