Interlude Paper Hunt
Vinny dug through the glove box, searching for the pieces of the torn prophecy. His frustration grew as he could remember, plain as day, that he placed the torn paper where his hands were now rummaging. He checked his watch, I can definitely make it back to that shop before Kate is home.
Vincent navigated back to the small town where Mayfest had taken place.
It took him about an hour to drive there where he started driving up and down the streets, trying to remember where he saw the fortuneteller’s shop.
Finally the glowing palm appeared and he sighed quickly.
His brown eyes absorbed the street and the row of businesses.
This time he walked straight to the ice cream parlor, Vinny tended to eat when he was processing emotions. With a chocolate ice cream cone in hand, he walked to Remy’s, and opened the door quickly, he stepped inside with purpose.
“Hey Remy! Are you here man?” Vinny called out.
“Mon ami! You returned! Di’ ze prophezy meet all of your needs?” Remy walked from a dim hallway. He wore a light green blanket casually draped around his shoulders, his muscular chest and abs exposed. A white linen pair of lounge pants covering his legs.
“Not really, no.” Vincent tried to sound tough but he was still eating his ice cream, which downplayed his frustration.
“Mon ami, Vinny! Tell Remy what is wrong.” He asked.
“Kate. My Kate, is on a date with another man right now. And I could have said ‘no’ but I couldn’t at the same time because I know! I know you gave me a prophecy that said this would happen.” His voice calmed as he licked his ice cream cone.
“Vinny, Vinny, Vinny. Prophecy, ami, it’s born of love. If you let it flow, don’t block it or fight it, that love, it’ll be yours forever, like the bayou meeting the river - meant to be.” Remy’s words echoed in Vincent’s head as he licked his ice cream cone.
“Dude. It’s killing me and it’s not killing me at the same time though. I love her more than anything. She’s the rhythm of my heart.” Vinny had a flair for the dramatic at times.
“Mais, if this hurtin’ you so bad, why you lettin’ it go on, cher?”
“WHAT! You just told me this has to happen! And the men are literally coming at her left and right ever since I read your prophecy.” Vinny struggled with the moment.
“Oui, das right, mon ami. Fate, she’s a tricky one, yeah. Sometimes we gotta walk a hard road to stay with the ones we love.” Remy placed his hand on Vincent’s shoulder and squeezed some comfort into the muscle.
“The worst part, bro,” Vinny felt like he had let himself become a little too vulnerable for the situation. “The worst part, I put the prophecy in my car and now it’s gone.”
“Oui, I know you didn’t just put it in your car. You done tore it up, yeah. When my prophecies get messed with, sometimes they find their way back home.” Remy gently scolded Vinny.
Looking down and licking his ice cream, “Yeah I know, wait, did you say it would return to you? Does that mean you have it?” Remy didn’t say a word but he led Vinny to a table with a crystal ball and the four torn pieces of paper.
“Mais, you gotta understand, cher, these prophecies, they ain’t just a piece of paper, no. They here to guide you, show you the way on this path.” As Remy spoke he discarded the envelope and taped the prophecy. “Alright, mon ami, let’s see if it comes back together now.”
With a wave of his hand, Vinny watched as Remy’s palm glowed, bathing the paper with a white light. The next glance at the paper revealed no tape holding it together at all, but a sheet of paper that was never torn.
“Mais, it worked, yeah. Now don’t go doin’ that again y’hear?
” Remy said with a smile as he handed the sheet back to an amazed Vinny.
His brown eyes were drawn to two zodiac symbols glowing on the sheet; one for Leo and one for Sagittarius.
Vinny crunched his ice cream cone loudly as he reread the prophecy; this time he folded it and placed it in his pocket.
The pair said their goodbyes and Remy hugged the Italian man before he walked him to the door; this left Vincent with an odd sense of comfort about the situation. He drove home to wait for Kate, getting a six pack of beer to fill the time.
