Chapter 43

43

VIOLET

Arms spread wide, shoulders hunched, I clasp the bathroom vanity in the staff restrooms.

Looking at myself in the mirror, I exhale a long breath. “Right, Violet. You’ve got this.”

I’m trying to keep it all together; however, it’s a bittersweet situation I find myself in now that I am here in Scotland.

Flying thousands of miles to be with him seems like it was a completely stupid idea. I’m so happy I took the leap and the job is incredible, but Lincoln looks so broken and tired. He looks lost. When I caught him checking me out earlier in the corridor, I could almost see his brain misfiring. He wants to be with me—I know he does deep down—but he’s struggling with the decision he made when he left Santa Monica, knowing he hurt both of us, and he can’t quite believe I am here. He’s having a hard time accepting I would do that for him and he’s at war with himself to take the leap in my direction again.

Maybe Knox’s plans are not going to pay off after all.

And even after Lincoln kissed my neck this morning, he’s still keeping his distance. He’s avoided me all day. If he’s not, it sure seems like he is.

I pull out my phone and text Hannah and Ruby.

Me

Please tell me I did the right thing.

Hannah

You did. You are going after what you want.

Ruby

Why? What’s up, baby girl?

Me

I have my doubts. I might be home sooner than planned.

Hannah

There is no way that is happening.

Ruby

Give him time to adjust.

Hannah

Call us later and we can cheer you up.

Me

It will be the middle of the night.

Hannah

We don’t care.

Ruby

You know me, I’m always up!

Hannah

It will work out.

Ruby

And remember we love you and so does Lincoln.

I hope that’s still true.
