Chapter 25

‘Why don’t you come with me?’ I asked him a little later after making a list of things I needed to do to make it happen.

For a split second he looked horrified by my suggestion. Then his face returned to normal. I kept seeing this change of mood on him and wondered if it was just the way he was.

‘Ah, that’s such a lovely idea. But I need to stay here.

I’ve also lined up a bit of business for myself while I’ve been here.

I know you think I sit around doing nothing all day.

’ He smirked at my shaking of the head. ‘I’m not silly, I know you do.

However, I’ve been busy and I have a meeting in a couple of days myself with someone I’ve been trying to secure a meeting with for a very long time.

I’m lucky as he’s going to be sailing his yacht into Cornwall in a day or two and he’s agreed to have lunch with me.

But if all goes well, then I won’t be far behind you.

’ It would be nice to see both Demetri and Makis in their home country.

It made me realise that I didn’t know much about their childhood and might learn more about the man I loved and his family. Makis’s voice broke into my thoughts.

‘This is really exciting, Michelle. How can I help?’

‘Well, if you can sort out the meeting with your colleague, the sooner I can get to Greece.’

‘Yep, I can do that, let me make a call. I’ll go into the bedroom to do that if that’s OK. And I’ll make plans to stay somewhere else.’

Should I offer to let him stay? It would be strange for him to be staying in my home without me being there, although if I was in Greece, it wouldn’t really affect me.

I decided to just ignore the thought for the moment.

I had other more important things to concentrate on, check out flights and think about packing.

Where Makis was staying was not my concern.

He was an adult and could probably work something out himself.

Thinking about Jacqui’s recent advice was finally rubbing off on me.

Learning to let people be responsible for their own decisions was quite liberating.

‘Great, thank you. I’ll take a look at flights and see how quickly I can get over to the island. Can you help me with that part do you think? Tell me how I get there?’

‘Yes, you’ll need to fly into Rhodes and then take the boat to Amarissa. But you’ll have to be careful because the boat doesn’t run very often. At this time of year probably only a couple of times a week, so you’ll have to time it all to perfection.’

‘Oh, really?’

‘Yes, it’s only a small island you know. Until the tourist season picks up, there’s no need for the boat to run.’

‘And there’s no other way to get there?’

‘I’m afraid not.’

‘OK, well I’m not going to let a little thing like that deter me. I’d best start to check those flights first and see what I can do.’

Makis went off into the guest room and I went outside to get a breath of fresh air. I could see Karen from the bed and breakfast next door pegging some washing out.

‘All right, Karen, still nice and busy, are you?’ I shouted over to her.

‘Chock-a-block, Michelle. Could do with a few more rooms this year. Literally don’t have any space for the next two months. Not even a night. There’s a big convention going on nearby and rooms are going like hot cakes. I should have put my prices up really to make the most of it.’

It was nice to see a fellow business thriving. We’d had a few discussions and I’d given her some hints and tips about how to use social media to her advantage and it seemed to be working.

Makis may as well stay at mine. I had no idea how long I’d be away in Greece for and it just made sense.

The thought of seeing Demetri again was really lifting my heart.

There was a bit of me that wondered if I should call ahead, but after all the romance novels I’d been reading lately, I had grander plans.

The man always makes a grand gesture, which is the start of their happy ever after.

But in this day and age, why did the man always have to be the one to take the lead?

This was going to be my moment. I couldn’t wait.

Before that, though, I had a very important phone call that I desperately wanted to make.
