Chapter 47

‘Thank you,’ he whispered. ‘Is there somewhere we can go to talk?’

‘Why don’t we go to the beach?’ I suggested. The sun was starting to set lower in the sky, and the bright blues hues of the day were changing to reds and oranges and even tinges of purple to indicate that dusk was on its way.

Still holding hands, we walked down the hill from Tessa’s land, towards the end of the cliff, and headed down the path which led to the beach. There was barely room for two, but he gripped onto me like his life depended on it.

Eventually we reached the end of the path and headed to the sand.

‘It’s beautiful here,’ he commented, looking around him at the beach beyond. My eye went out to the horizon, a sailboat in the distance.

‘It is. But then Amarissa is beautiful too,’ I replied, remembering how stunning it was when I was sat in that little restaurant overlooking the harbour and the market square.

Nervously, I looked around, eventually finding a flat rock to sit on.

Demetri sat beside me, my hand still tightly held in his.

He breathed in and started to speak.

‘Seth told me what Makis did. The money he took from you. The jewellery too. I’m sorry he did this. It is unforgivable.’

I shrugged, not sure how to respond.

‘He has form for this. There is so much you need to know, Michelle. I’m not sure where to start.

’ He raked his hand through his floppy brown hair, and my heart gave a little skip.

I didn’t know why but I always thought this an incredibly sexy movement.

Wholly inappropriate at that moment. I looked away as all the feelings I had for this man came flooding back to me.

‘The beginning?’ I suggested.

He nodded and took a deep breath.
