CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

TAYLOR

Taylor ended the call with Dani and turned to Cooper lounging on the couch beside her reading a manuscript.

“I have to go home,” she said. “Whitney needs me. Dani is with her, but Dani thinks I should be there.”

Cooper sat up. “What’s going on?”

Taylor told him what happened. “Now, Whitney’s blaming herself. Dani thinks she might end her relationship with Nick over the fear of something like this happening again.”

“Sounds like Whitney could use all the support she can get. Do you want me to ride up there with you?”

“No, but thanks. I think this is a Gilford girl time. I also have to help with the arrangements for the cottage. I promised to do my share. Construction is nearing the end, and I’m in charge of landscaping, which will be put in as soon as the house is painted.”

“How long will you be gone?” said Cooper, drawing her close.

“I don’t know. A couple of weeks at least,” she said, lifting her face.

He lowered his lips to hers.

She reveled in his kiss, allowing all her angst to be swept away in a wave of desire. It was always this way.

When they parted, she smiled up at him. “I won’t last more than a couple of weeks without you. Maybe you can arrange to join me in Lilac Lake.”

“Definitely,” he said. “I’m going to miss you like crazy. It won’t be the same without you here.” Since he’d furnished his condo, she’d opted to stay with him. She still hadn’t decided whether to sell hers. Time would take care of that decision.

###

Driving to Lilac Lake, Taylor filled with determination. She’d help Whitney and make sure the cottage would be ready for them to move into by the end of the month. It was a challenge, but they could do it.

The one thing she and Dani hadn’t talked about was the ghost. They wanted to be sure Mrs. Maynard or whoever it was had gone before making the cottage theirs.
