Chapter 14
I park along the street in front of a tall apartment building.
There’s no way for me to know which apartment he lives in or if they’ll even let me through the door, but if I don’t try, I may never get to see him again, and that wrecks me.
I push the call button for the front desk, my mind racing to come up with a lie.
“Yes?” An older man’s voice answers, and I put on my best “celebrity interview” voice. “Hi, my name is Kane Ellis. My friend has been missing for a few days, and I can’t seem to get a hold of him; do you think you could help me out?” My heart races as I wait with bated breath.
He doesn’t reply; instead, the door buzzes, and I can see the security guard leaning over his desk to get a better look.
His eyes light up when he recognizes me, and I give him my signature smile.
“Thank you so much. Actually. Do you think you could help me out further?” I lean on the desk and slide a legal pad and pen toward me without him really noticing.
I look down at the pad and sign a couple of pages, then rest my arms on the pad to lean closer, “I don’t actually know what apartment number my friend lives in.
Would you look it up for me?” The older man nods aggressively before searching for what I asked.
He gives me the apartment number and floor, and I slide him the legal pad. “Thank you so much, sir.”
I rush through the lobby to the elevator just in time to watch the packed box’s door close.
Waiting for the elevator to return feels torturous, so I decide instead to take the stairs.
I stare up the spiraling case and take a deep breath.
I run—as quickly as I can—until I reach his floor.
And then I take another deep breath, place my hand on the handle, and push.
“Good morning,” I say sleepily as the morning sun glares into the window.
The weight that rested on my shoulders finally feels bearable again.
I didn’t come here last night expecting him to forgive me so easily—or at all.
But being here—Miles’s warm body entangled with mine, his scent surrounding me, his piney-green eyes staring up at me—makes me never want to leave this bed again.
“Shouldn’t you be getting ready for work?” Miles asks, and my euphoria is smashed.
