Chapter 105

Giorgio

Outskirts of Florence

I’d been sitting there in the car for the last ten minutes, stunned out of my mind.

I couldn’t believe Emilia had walked out on me like that.

I couldn’t believe it was over.

It can’t be –

It CAN’T –

Suddenly, my phone rang.

Adriano.

I answered immediately. “Yes?”

“Where are you?!” he shouted. “Fiesole?”

Shit.

I should’ve already been to Bianca’s parents’ place by now.

“No – I, uh, got delayed – ”

“GOOD.”

…good?

“The Camorra are shooting up the Piazza della Repubblica. I need you to – ”

“WHAT?!” I cried out in horror.

The Piazza della Repubblica was a heavily trafficked area in the old city.

There was a carousel there –

Families –

Children.

“The other guys are meeting me there in five!” Adriano barked. “How soon can you get there?”

I was on the other side of the city.

“Twenty minutes – maybe 25 – ”

“Get there as fast as you can, and wear your bulletproof vest!” Adriano shouted before he hung up.

As I started the engine, I thought about Emilia.

If you were afraid I wasn’t going to come home someday, Biondina –

Maybe you got out at exactly the right time.
