Chapter 106
Dario
Inside The Hospital
Iwas in a patient examination room.
Dr. Aiello was listening to Alessandra’s heartbeat and asking questions in a soothing voice –
When Lars tapped at the glass window in the wooden door. His face looked grim.
“Excuse me for a moment,” I said to my wife and the doctor, then walked out into the hallway.
Massimo was there with Lars. He looked equally disturbed.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Niccolo called,” Lars said. “Adriano told him there’s a mass shooting in the Piazza della Repubblica. He thinks it’s the Camorra.”
“…what?!” I asked, stunned.
Everything we knew about Cesare Caproni suggested he was a psychopath –
But this was madness.
Lars continued. “Adriano’s going over there with his men. He said Florence is our city, and we have to make a show of force.”
“He’s right,” I said.
Florence was our city.
The fact that Cesare Caproni thought he could come here and pull this shit –
We would have to teach him he was sorely mistaken.
“Nic wants me to help Adriano,” Massimo said.
I hesitated –
But only for a second.
“Go,” I said.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Lars said. “The Camorra are up to something, and I don’t like losing Massimo.”
“If we don’t stop this attack,” I said, “every politician and policeman in Florence is going to be screaming for our heads. You understand?”
Lars nodded reluctantly.
“Go,” I told my brother. “And be careful.”
Massimo nodded, then ran for the stairwell.
“It makes no sense,” Lars said in a bewildered voice. “Why would Caproni do something like this?”
“Because he’s a fucking madman,” I said before I went back into the room with my wife.
