Chapter 51 Like a Mouse Seeing a Cat
Clara Bennett froze suddenly.
Every time she heard Jason Ford's voice now, her body automatically went into a state of alert, her eyes warily fixed on him.
Jason approached, and seeing her like this, he couldn't help but smile lightly, his gaze first turning to Anna on the side. "You can go home, Clara stays."
Anna had no choice but to leave first, glancing back at Clara with concern as she went.
Everyone in the company knew about Jason's schemes against Clara.
Leaving her alone like this, could he be up to something again?
Anna stopped at the company entrance.
Last time they went on a business trip together, according to company policy, employees had to provide an emergency contact to the company and their partner, just in case. She remembered that Clara had listed her husband, Mason Reed...
Anna found Mason's number in her phone's contacts, hesitated for a moment, and then sent him a message.
...
In the office, Jason looked at Clara with a sinister smile.
"You really are something, Clara," he said, looking her up and down. "The White Family in Central City, which the company couldn't secure for years, and you managed to get your sales proposal in with just one try! Ha, impressive!"
Clara looked at him indifferently. "Is that why you wanted me to stay, Manager Ford?"
"Of course not," Jason cleared his throat. "There's a dinner tonight. You're coming with me!"
Clara gave him a look of disgust.
But Jason just grinned, completely unfazed.
He knew Clara hated these kinds of events, but he deliberately wanted to use them to make her uncomfortable.
Since he couldn't have her, he would use her as a stepping stone to help him advance.
"Well, I didn't really want to invite you," Jason said with a sinister smile. "But who else in the company is as beautiful as you? Sometimes, being too pretty is a problem!"
"Sorry, I can't go," Clara said coldly. "My husband is waiting for me at home. I need to..."
"Go home and cook for him?" Jason scoffed. "Is your husband incapable of taking care of himself or something?"
"Jason, watch your words," Clara glared at him. "Whether my husband can take care of himself is none of your business, but if you dare to provoke me again, he'll beat you until you can't take care of yourself!"
Jason's face darkened, and he said no more.
"Anyway, this dinner was specifically requested by Mr. Thomas Sun for you to attend. I'm just passing on the message! If you don't go, you'll offend the client, and you won't have a place in the company anymore!"
With that, he turned and left. Clara stared at his retreating figure with resentment, gritting her teeth.
Since it involved her job, she had no choice but to reluctantly comply.
So, Clara sent a message to Mason and then dragged her heavy feet toward the Evergreen Hotel.
As soon as she entered the private room, she saw a handsome man who looked like a top-tier celebrity sitting in the main seat.
Clara was slightly taken aback.
She hadn't gotten a good look at him that day in front of the White Group building, but now, seeing him up close, he was indeed as Anna had said—even more handsome than in photos.
Jasper hadn't expected Clara to show up here.
When he saw her approaching, he was stunned, and after a brief moment of shock, he started to feel a chill down his spine.
Before entering, Thomas Sun and Jason had been eagerly trying to curry favor with him, mysteriously telling him there would be a beautiful woman accompanying him tonight.
But if Third Master found out about this...
Jasper took a sharp breath and stood up abruptly, staring straight at Clara.
"Are you Mr. Jasper?" Clara nodded slightly. "I'm Clara Bennett, an employee in the sales department."
"Oh, oh," Jasper stammered, nodding.
Thomas and Jason exchanged a knowing smile.
It seemed that even a hero couldn't resist a beauty. With Clara here, Jasper would surely be putty in their hands!
"Clara, what are you standing there for!" Thomas signaled her with his eyes. "Pour Mr. Jasper a drink!"
Clara reluctantly walked over to Jasper and was about to pour the wine when Jasper, looking panicked, hurriedly stopped her. "No, no, no! Don't... don't be so polite..."
Everyone was taken aback.
Jasper forced a laugh, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, his hands awkwardly not knowing where to put them.
Jason looked at Clara again. "Go on, toast Mr. Jasper!"
Clara had no choice but to pour a glass of wine and drink it herself as a toast.
Jasper's heart sank. He couldn't let Clara toast him! So, he quickly filled his own glass and downed three cups in quick succession.
"Let's not just focus on drinking!" Thomas spoke up again. "Ha, Clara, go serve some food to Mr. Jasper!"
But before Clara could pick up the chopsticks, Jasper hurriedly said, "I can serve myself! I wouldn't dare trouble Miss Clara!"
Thomas furrowed his brows, sensing something was off, but he couldn't quite pinpoint what it was.
There were rumors that Jasper was quite the playboy and had seen many women. Even if he was interested in Clara, he shouldn't be this nervous, right?
But as he observed Jasper now, this proud young master seemed to be acting like a mouse in front of a cat around Clara.
Thomas and Jason exchanged glances and, using the excuse of going out for a smoke, left the private room.
Meanwhile, Clara had drunk that glass a bit too quickly. She wasn't good with alcohol, and now the effects were hitting her, making her feel dizzy. She apologized to Jasper, "Excuse me, Mr. Jasper, I need to step out for a moment."
"Sure, sure, go ahead."
Clara smiled and walked out, her steps a bit unsteady.
She wanted to get some fresh air at the hotel entrance, but as soon as she turned the corner into the main hallway, she heard two people talking in low voices.
