Waking up Monday morning, I load a pod into my single-serve coffeemaker. While impatiently waiting for the caffeinated brew, I reread Barclay’s email on my phone. Fortunately, it’s fairly straightforward.
Barclay makes it clear that for the next week, my job consists of “exactly two components.”
First, I’m to accompany some stuffy representative of the foundation to various events in case he has a random legal question. Okay, Barclay didn’t call him stuffy. It’s just that all our clients fit that description, so it’s a safe assumption.
Second, I’m assigned to “properly represent” the firm at the charity events because the firm is a sponsor. “Properly represent” is code for don’t embarrass the firm. Thank god he’ll never know about my drunken elevator ride, which was not at all proper.
Grabbing my steaming coffee, I blow on it and take a much needed sip. I’m not sure if I’m addicted to the caffeine or the aroma. Regardless, it’s my magic wakeup potion each morning. With my first dose of the elixir on its way into my bloodstream, I’m ready to shower and dress.
As I’m putting on the finishing touches of my makeup, I go over my mental checklist, not wanting to forget anything. Then it hits me. I haven’t told Lowri and Cassie what’s going on. The interns still think they’re helping me on a contract dispute today, so I fire off a text to them.
Me: Change of plans for the week. I’ll be working with one of the firm’s billionaire clients on a charity project. Will include the two of you when I can. Otherwise, enjoy a light work week. HR will let you know about scheduled seminars and social events.
Lowri: A charity project sounds interesting, but how does that relate to corporate law?
Me: Not sure it does. The firm is also a sponsor, so we have to show up. I’m a last-minute replacement for another attorney.
Cassie: Sounds like you’ll have an easy week too. As hard as you work, enjoy the break.
Me: I’ll be on call 24/7 for this client, but I doubt there will be any burning legal issues to track down. We’ll see how it turns out.
Lowri: We’re available for any charity galas if you need us. ??
Me: I’ll keep that in mind. LOL. Not sure what the events are until after the meeting this morning. Reach out if you need anything. I’ll text when I know more.
Cassie: Sounds good.
