CHAPTER 5

Blair

The seconds can’t tick away fast enough. Why can’t it be tomorrow already? I have cleaned the entire apartment, including the baseboards at this point, wanting everything to be perfect for when he comes home. If I don’t stay busy, the waiting is going to kill me. Ugh! Will we really be able to make this work? I mean, we haven’t even been officially dating yet and now we’ll be living together. But then again, we’ve known each other for so long that it almost feels like we’ve skipped a few steps in the relationship process. But who cares? I’m just excited to finally be with him and have him close by. Maybe this crazy decision to live together wasn’t as impulsive or reckless as it seemed at first.

Oliver comes over and sits next to me on the couch, so I rub his back and look over the apartment. Will he like it? It’s much smaller than his place, but some of us are still working our way up the pay scale. Since this new unit recruited him, he gets a pay bump and he might be able to get an even bigger place than before. I smile. I won’t object. Especially since I’ve lived in this apartment since college, and it just seems so juvenile.

My phone buzzes against the coffee table. I sigh looking at my brother’s name flashing across the screen.

“To what do I owe this pleasure?”

He laughs. “Now that is a great way to answer the phone when your favorite brother calls… but seriously listen. What are we doing for Vance’s welcome home party?”

Of course he knows that his best friend is coming home. “He gets home tomorrow, right?”

“Yeah, did you forget? Oh, I’m gonna make sure to tell him. In all seriousness though, he seemed pretty down when he left so I was thinking maybe a night out.”

Sure, I can be greedy and want him all to myself tomorrow night, but my brother deserves time with him too. So, instead of making up some excuse, I agree.

“Alright, he said he was getting in around noon, so I’ll call him around three and see if he is up for it. I’ll text you the details. Love you sis.”

I bite my lip. “Love you too, twerp.”

My brother and I have always been close. I guess that’s why Vance and I know each other so well. They have always been so protective over me and until we slept together, I never knew he had feelings for me. When I think back to all those years I could have been having mind blowing sex… I get pissed. Yet, it isn’t just his fault. I never had the courage to say anything either. The fear of rejection. It fucks us all.

“Alright, Oliver. We have one more night and then Vance will be home. What do you say we call it an early one… huh bud?” He licks my palm and then jumps off the couch heading into the bedroom. Oliver understands the assignment.

I turn off all the lights and then find in his dog bed next to mine. “Good boy. See you in the morning.”

I’ll dream of him again tonight… just like I have the last 362 days.
