chapter 5
The forest thickened as they moved deeper, shadows folding over the path like dark velvet.
Every branch, every frozen leaf, seemed alive, humming beneath Ravin's senses.
The Forbidden Forest wasn't just alive — it was aware.
It watched them, tested them, guided them deeper beneath its ancient canopy.
And the feeling of being watched never fully left.
It lingered beneath Ravin's skin with every step.
Not threatening.
Not safe either.
Just present.
Selara moved ahead with fluid precision, molten-gold eyes scanning the treeline for even the faintest sign of movement.
Every step she took looked effortless, confident in a way Ravin found increasingly difficult to ignore.
Nyx followed slightly behind, slower and quieter, fingers brushing bark and moss as if the forest whispered secrets directly to her.
Ravin led them through the shifting paths, every instinct stretched tight.
Each crunch of frost beneath her boots, each whisper of wind through the trees carried meaning.
Tomas and the hunters still lingered somewhere beyond the boundary, their intent pressing faintly against the edge of the forest like distant thunder, but the deeper they traveled, the weaker that feeling became.
The forest was swallowing them.
Hours passed navigating twisted roots, narrow hollows, and frozen streams before Ravin finally spotted a natural depression in the earth surrounded by massive boulders and thick pines. A narrow stream curved nearby, masking sound beneath the steady rush of water.
"Here," she murmured.
Selara checked the ridgeline immediately while Nyx studied the surrounding trees carefully before giving a small nod.
It would work.
Ravin crouched beside the icy stream, pressing her palm briefly into the freezing water while forcing her breathing to steady. Exhaustion dragged heavily at her body now, but stopping didn't mean safety. They still needed food. Warmth. Something to survive the night.
"I'll gather what I can," Ravin said quietly.
Selara's eyes narrowed slightly. "Alone?"
"I'll be faster."
For a second it looked like Selara wanted to argue.
Nyx noticed it too.
"We'll stay close," Nyx said calmly, though her gaze lingered on Ravin for a moment longer than necessary.
Ravin tried not to think about that.
Without another word, she disappeared into the trees.
The forest shifted around her as she moved. She could smell damp roots beneath frost-covered earth, hear small animals moving beneath brush, feel subtle vibrations beneath the ground itself.
And still—
that feeling remained.
Eyes following her through the mist.
Watching from somewhere deeper between the trees.
Once, Ravin stopped suddenly and looked back over her shoulder.
Nothing.
Only pale fog drifting through ancient trunks.
But she knew she wasn't imagining it.
She caught a rabbit quickly with precise, silent strikes before gathering roots and berries nearby. By the time she returned, dusk had settled deeper through the forest.
Selara relaxed visibly the moment Ravin stepped back into camp.
Small.
Quick.
But Ravin noticed.
Interesting.
"You were gone longer than expected," Selara said evenly.
Ravin placed the rabbit near the fire pit she was building. "Miss me?"
Selara's molten gaze flicked toward her instantly.
Nyx covered a faint smile badly.
"Oh," Selara murmured, crouching beside the fire, "she does joke."
Ravin rolled her eyes, but warmth curled unexpectedly in her chest anyway.
The fire caught slowly, flames flickering against stone and bark until soft light spilled across the hollow. Shadows danced across Selara's sharp features and softened the strength in Nyx's expression.
For the first time since fleeing Bloodpine—
the silence felt calm.
Nyx settled beside Ravin while helping prepare the food, their shoulders brushing occasionally as they worked. Neither moved away anymore when it happened.
Across the fire, Selara watched them while pretending not to.
Ravin caught her staring once.
Selara didn't even look embarrassed.
"What?" Ravin asked.
Selara smirked faintly. "Nothing."
Liar.
The fire crackled softly between them while cold wind whispered through the trees overhead. Beyond the warmth of the firelight, darkness shifted endlessly between the trunks.
Watching.
Always watching.
Ravin felt it constantly now.
Not danger.
Not quite.
Curiosity.
Like the forest itself had become interested in them.
Or something inside it had.
Nyx leaned slightly closer while adjusting the rabbit over the flames, her arm pressing lightly against Ravin's for a moment longer than necessary.
Ravin looked at her instinctively.
Nyx looked back.
Calm.
Steady.
Too close.
The heat from the fire suddenly felt less responsible for the warmth beneath Ravin's skin.
Across from them, Selara noticed immediately.
Her molten eyes narrowed slightly before she looked away toward the trees again.
Jealousy.
Tiny.
But there.
The realization sent another strange flutter through Ravin's chest.
Dangerous.
The connection building between them frightened her more than the forest did.
Not because it felt wrong.
Because it felt natural.
Outside the firelight, the Forbidden Forest hummed softly around them.
And somewhere deeper within the trees—
unseen eyes continued watching the three women beside the fire.
