chapter 6
The forest woke angry.
Roots erupted from the frozen earth without warning, glowing faintly as they twisted toward the trio. Branches bent unnaturally overhead, forming barriers that forced them into narrow paths and sudden drops.
"Move!" Selara snapped, molten-gold eyes flashing.
Ravin reacted instantly, boots digging into the frost as she darted sideways. A thick root exploded upward beneath Nyx's feet, fast as a striking snake.
Ravin caught her wrist before the ground swallowed her ankle.
Nyx slammed into her chest hard enough to knock the breath from both of them.
For one brief second they froze there.
Too close.
Nyx's hand gripped the front of Ravin's jacket tightly while Ravin's arm locked around her waist to steady her.
Then another root shattered through the ground beside them.
Ravin pulled her forward immediately. "Run."
The earth trembled again.
Not hunters.
Not Tomas.
The forest itself.
It was testing them.
They moved together now without hesitation, instincts syncing faster than thought.
Selara cut left before Ravin even signaled it.
Nyx redirected them toward stable ground before cracks split open beneath their feet.
Ravin anticipated both women instinctively, adjusting pace and direction without words.
Hours ago they had been strangers.
Now they fought like something connected.
A wall of thorns erupted ahead of them.
Selara shifted partially, claws tearing through the weakest point before shouting, "Through there!"
Nyx ducked low beside Ravin while branches whipped overhead violently. One caught Ravin across the shoulder hard enough to throw her sideways.
Selara grabbed her immediately.
Strong hands caught Ravin by the waist before she hit the ground.
"You good?" Selara asked, breathless but steady.
Ravin looked up too quickly.
Selara was close.
Very close.
Close enough for Ravin to feel her warmth despite the cold.
Close enough to notice how sharp her golden eyes looked when they were worried.
Ravin's pulse stumbled once.
"I'm fine," she muttered.
Selara's mouth curved faintly. "You always say that."
Before Ravin could answer, the ground shook again.
They ran.
The forest pushed harder, roots snapping from the earth while twisted branches blocked exits and redirected them deeper through the maze of trees. Frost burst beneath their boots. Breathing turned ragged. Muscles burned.
And then—
stillness.
The three of them stumbled into a clearing where pale frost glittered beneath filtered sunlight. The roots stilled instantly. The humming tension faded back into silence.
The test was over.
Ravin bent slightly, catching her breath while scanning the treeline automatically. Selara remained near her shoulder while Nyx steadied herself beside a stone outcrop.
And that's when Ravin felt it again.
Eyes.
Watching.
Her head snapped toward the brush at the far edge of the clearing.
Familiar scent.
Her stomach dropped instantly.
"Someone's there," she said quietly.
Selara straightened immediately, molten eyes narrowing. Nyx shifted closer to Ravin without thinking, ready for a fight.
A branch cracked softly.
Two small figures stepped from behind the ferns.
Not hunters.
Children.
A boy and a girl stood frozen near the treeline, both covered in dirt and dried mud, cloaks torn from travel. Fear lingered in their scent beneath exhaustion and stubborn determination.
The boy met Ravin's gaze first.
"Ravin," he breathed softly.
Her chest tightened painfully.
"Kai...?"
He looked older somehow than the last time she'd seen him. Leaner. Harder. But those same fierce eyes stared back at her. The same ones that used to follow her during training drills.
Beside him, Mira lifted her chin despite visibly trembling.
"You shouldn't be here," Ravin said quietly.
Kai swallowed hard. "We saw what they did. We followed you when you ran."
Selara and Nyx both stiffened immediately.
"You followed us?" Selara asked sharply.
Mira nodded quickly. "We stayed hidden after the fight. We didn't want Tomas to find us."
Ravin's mind raced.
These kids had crossed into the Forbidden Forest alone.
For her.
Her chest ached unexpectedly at the realization.
"You could've died," she said, stepping toward them.
Kai straightened stubbornly. "We would've died if we stayed."
Silence settled heavily over the clearing.
The forest hummed softly around them.
Watching.
Waiting.
Nyx looked toward Ravin carefully now, something softer entering her expression as Kai and Mira instinctively moved closer to Ravin's side.
"They trust you," Nyx murmured.
The words hit harder than Ravin expected.
She remembered helping Kai correct his footing during drills. Teaching Mira how to track wind direction instead of relying only on scent.
Small things.
Things she'd never realized mattered this much.
Selara crossed her arms, though her expression had softened slightly too. "This complicates things."
"They're staying," Ravin said immediately.
Neither woman argued.
That surprised her.
Kai looked exhausted enough to collapse, but he still stood protectively closer to Mira. Ravin crouched in front of them slowly.
"You don't leave my sight again," she said firmly. "You move when I say move. You listen the first time."
Two small heads nodded instantly.
Mira looked like she might cry from relief.
Something protective and fierce tightened inside Ravin's chest.
Not just toward the children anymore.
Toward all of them.
Nyx stepped beside Ravin quietly. "They're freezing."
Ravin looked up.
Nyx had already removed part of her outer cloak and wrapped it gently around Mira's shoulders.
Selara sighed dramatically before pulling off her gloves and tossing them toward Kai.
"You look miserable, kid."
Kai caught them awkwardly, startled. "Oh."
Selara smirked slightly. "Don't make it weird."
For the first time since entering the clearing, Ravin laughed softly.
The sound surprised everyone.
Including her.
Nyx smiled immediately.
Selara looked unfairly pleased with herself.
And standing there in the middle of the clearing, surrounded by frost, danger, and the strange pulse of the Forbidden Forest—
Ravin felt it again.
That pull.
Toward Selara.
Toward Nyx.
Toward the tiny pack forming around her piece by piece.
Not the old pack built on fear and obedience.
This one.
Chosen.
The clearing felt different now.
Warmer somehow despite the cold.
More real.
Selara glanced toward the dark forest ahead before looking back at Ravin. "This just got harder."
Ravin looked toward Kai and Mira beside the firelight filtering through the trees.
Then toward Nyx.
Toward Selara.
"Good," she said quietly.
"Let it."
