Chapter 71

MAC

King of the dumbasses. That was me. I could run into a burning building, but I couldn’t open up my heart.

While Theo drank his coffee, I went to the window and stared out at Dad and Andy working on the bat box. The crown GG made him looked really sad after over a week, but Andy still wore it.

The crown meant love. Georgia’s love for Andy and him not taking it off showed me he loved her in return. Missed her. I was jealous of a six-year-old on how he could give his love so freely, so unconditionally. It had literally been love at first sight for him.

Maybe it had been with me as well. Seeing her at the airport and fucking BAM!

I wanted her in my life. And she kept popping into it.

Being the renter of the garage apartment.

The organizer of the fire department fundraiser.

Even Dad’s broken foot. Over and over again, she was put in my path.

Yet, I fucked up every chance. Every single one.

Because what I gave to Georgia had been conditional. I put boundaries on it and I could see now that love couldn’t be confined. It couldn’t be controlled. Just like Georgia herself.

Did I want to stay in my safe, controlled, in charge life and be alone, or did I want to let Georgia rule my world again?

It was time to find out.

I opened the back door. Andy and Dad looked up from their hammering.

“You want Georgia to be your new mom?”

For the first time in over a week, Andy’s face brightened and he smiled. He dazzled with the joy that came from loving someone else.

Fuck, Andy was the smart one. And he was six.

“Yes!” he said, jumping up and down.

“Then let’s go get her.”

“It’s about damned time,” Dad muttered, but he was smiling.

Andy ran up to me and hugged my legs. “I told you she was the one.”

“Now we just have to get to Georgia. In Georgia.”

Theo came over and slapped me on the shoulder. “Good thing you know someone with a plane.”
