Chapter 2

CHAPTER TWO

“Hey, come sit with us!”

My eyes quickly scan the cafeteria a couple of hours later, trying to find the source of the invitation.

When my eyes finally settle on a pretty girl with light-brown curly hair and a big grin on her face, I raise an eyebrow.

Her smile brightens even more as she gets up from the table she’s seated at and walks over to where I’m standing.

“Yes, you,” she confirms with a girlish giggle. “I’m Kaylee and I love the way you handed Mr. Robinson his ass in front of everyone.”

“Thanks,” I mumble.

“Don’t mention it,” she says as she links an arm through mine. “What’s your name?”

“Genesis. Almost everyone calls me Geni, though.”

“I like it!”

She leads the way to an empty spot at her table, babbling the entire time about shit I wasn’t even listening to.

“This is Elsie,” she says, placing a hand briefly on the shoulder of the blonde girl next to her. She has the biggest blue eyes I’ve ever seen and a smile about the same wattage as Kaylee’s.

“And this one over here is Fia,” she continues as she pats the back of the girl sitting on the other side of her. This one has long, straight black hair, beautiful almond-shaped eyes, and darkest, black eyes I’ve ever seen. Her smile isn’t as welcoming as the other two.

“This is Genesis,” Kaylee says as she nods at me.

“So, tell us about yourself, Geni,” Kaylee instructs as she props an elbow on the table.

I shrug, “Nothing to tell really. We moved here three days ago because of my father’s work, and if I’m lucky, I’ll last an entire semester before we have to move again.”

“What does your dad do?” Fia asks.

“Financial consulting.”

“He must be really good if you guys move around a lot,” Elsie remarks, and I nod.

I clear my throat as I begin to pick up my ham and cheese sub, then let my eyes wander toward the entrance as I try to tune them out.

I know it’s rude considering they’re letting me sit with them, but I’ve never been really good at the girl squad thing.

As I bite down on the sandwich, I sit up almost instantly.

I never knew something as an instant-crush was possible until now.

The young man that’s started to make his way past the table, chews the inside of his mouth as he glances around the crowded cafeteria.

I can’t get over how much more grown-up he holds himself than the rest of us.

Before I realize it, he turns his attention toward me. I look away just before our eyes have a chance to meet.

I can hear him letting out a loud sigh after he sees the other three watching him, then startle slightly when he chucks his tray onto the nearest table and stalks out of the cafeteria.

“You better follow him since he’s offering,” Kaylee tells me conversationally.

“Offering what?” I ask.

“You’ll see,” Fia remarks. She smirks at Kaylee, “I saw the way he just looked at you, but you should hurry up before he changes his mind.”

The three girls share a knowing glance and I shake my head.

“Well, if you won’t then I will,” Fia states as she gets up from the table.

“Leave some for the rest of us, Fia!” Kaylee calls after her as she begins to walk out of the cafeteria.
