Chapter Thirty-Five

C assie

I placed the lid on the box sitting on my desk. There hadn’t been a lot to clean out of my office. I didn’t keep a lot of personal things there.

“I can’t believe you’re leaving,” Lisa, my assistant, said.

“Time for me to move on.” I shrugged. While showering this morning, I’d made the decision to leave Fantasies, Inc. It hadn’t been easy, but there was no way I could see Marcus every day and not break down.

It was better this way. I bottled up my emotions.

I’d sworn my staff to secrecy until I could talk with the President Boyd and hand in my resignation personally.

Yes, I could have chickened out and just sent an email to HR.

But I couldn’t. I owed it to the president to tell him in person, especially since I was leaving without notice.

I glanced at my watch. Ten-twenty. I was due in the president’s office at ten-thirty. Picking up my letter of resignation, I crossed over to Lisa. “I want you to know I’ve recommended you to Mr. Boyd as my replacement.”

Lisa looked stunned. “But—”

“You deserve it.” I walked past my stunned assistant to the elevators. Marcus had a meeting with Josh’s department. He’d let that slip yesterday, so I timed everything out to avoid him. If I saw him… I didn’t have a clue what I would do.

My heart dropped to my feet as the elevator whisked me to the top floor. While this was for the best, I couldn’t help but be sad. I was going to miss my job and the people I worked with. Jackie, Mr. Boyd’s executive assistant smiled at me when I walked in. “Go on in; he’s waiting for you.”

“Thanks.” I took a deep breath before knocking on the door and entering.

“Cassie, you’re always so punctual.” Mr. Boyd rose to his feet.

I stopped in my tracks. There was someone sitting in front of his desk. “I’m sorry; Jackie said to come in. I can come back later.”

“You will not take one step,” a familiar voice commanded.

Shock at hearing Marcus’ voice froze me in place. What the hell was he doing here?

“That’s my cue to leave.” Mr. Boyd crossed the room to me.

“I’m going to tell you what I told Marcus: I’m not accepting your resignation.

Work this out, and be sure to notify HR afterward if you choose to continue your relationship.

” Mr. Boyd stepped around me, opened the door, and closed it behind him.

My stomach clenched when Marcus stood and faced me. He was pissed.

Could I blame him? Not really. I did leave without saying good bye. But it was more than that. There was something in his features besides anger. Something I didn’t dare put into words.
