Chapter 16
Months Later…
Sunday evenings had all started to look exactly the same. I didn’t know how important that structure was until I saw it in action. Cameron sat at the dining room table with his homework stacked neatly and a pencil behind his ear the way Jordy did when he was working something out.
Jordy was next to him with the chair angled so they could work together but leaving enough space to let Cam work things out on his own. Jase leaned against the doorframe with his arms folded. He watched carefully and offered his input here and there where he felt it was necessary.
“You sure about that one?” Jordy asked, placing a finger on the paper.
“I checked it twice.”
“But are you sure?” Jase asked from his post.
“It’s right.” Our son nodded confidently.
Jordy’s smile was huge as he glanced at his brother over his shoulder. “You’re right. I’m proud of you, champ. You see the difference between thinking and knowing. When you know something, you’re not afraid of questions. You have facts to back it up.”
“Yep. When I know what I’m doing, I can do it with confidence, right, Dad?”
“You’re right. You did good, Son,” Jase stated, mussing his hair before walking over to join me in the kitchen.
“Can I go shoot hoops now?” he asked, looking between them before they both nodded.
Cameron packed up his homework and took off to his room. Minutes later, the thud of the basketball could be heard as he headed outside.
“I can’t believe how fast he’s growing,” I said, once Jase was next to me in the kitchen.
“Time flies. Are you making dinner, or am I?”
“I thought we could cook together.”
“Good. I’ll leave the two of you to it while me and Cam shoot hoops,” Jordy announced before leaving the room.
It didn’t bother me that he hated cooking, because Jase loved to.
He got busy chopping up vegetables while I heated some oil to sauté them.
Nobody worried about whose turn it was or who should be pulling more weight.
After dinner, JoJo washed dishes, which I hated.
At the end of the night, we were all on the couch watching TV.
My heart got full every time I thought about my little family.
I watched as Cameron slept on Jordy’s shoulder.
He kissed the top of his head as Jase picked him up and carried him to bed.
“I’m going to head out for a minute after I put him down,” he mentioned as he left the room. “Good night.”
“Good night,” we muttered in unison before Jordy turned to me with that signature devilish grin.
“And then there were two,” Jordy noted as he kissed the side of my face.
The End
