Chapter 24
With Trevor
Donna
“Argh,”I growl and toss my wine glass.
“I could’ve told you that was going to backfire on you,” Corinne says smugly.
“Shut up and turn it up.”
She rolls her eyes but turns up the volume on the TV. Damn near every station has been showing the same crap. Instead of crucifying Trevor and his little whore, they’ve been singing their praises.
“Wow, this is priceless,” Corinne giggles, causing me to scowl even more.
I tune her out and focus on the TV. It’s like watching a train wreck. I can’t force myself to look away.
“We’re here with Annie Bakermen. She has known the accused since grade school. Annie, what can you tell us about Mr. Monroe?”
“I just wanted to say I’ve only ever knew Trevor to be a kind soul. He’s hard working, and he loves the dickens out of those babies of his. I couldn’t tell you a bad thing about Trevor.
“He’s a pillar in the community. A real stand-up guy, and I hate this for him. Now the one accusing him of this, that’s another story. But that’s none of my business. I stand with Trevor Monroe.”
“It be your own friends,” Corinne says, shaking her head.
I reach to grab the remote from her to change to another channel. Again, they’re covering the same thing. I roll my eyes and toss the remote down.
“He worked on our home last spring. Always had a smile for us and was kind enough to put the playset in for our little ones in the backyard free of charge. My husband and I see him down at the grocery store with his kids all the time.
“He’s a very nice man. I stand with Trevor Monroe,” this woman says.
It cuts to an older man. “He’s a fine young fella. Comes to get his bait and tackle from me. He takes them boys fishing almost every other weekend.
“He’s polite and those boys have manners just like him. The wife came with him once when the boys were little. Now that wasn’t a lady at all. Mean to the core. I stand with Trevor Monroe.”
“Turn it off,” I snarl as I stand to pace the room.
“What did you expect? You’re going up against Texas’s very own darlin’. Not to mention Trevor really is a kind person.
“If he knew the shit you’ve been up to for years, he probably would have finished it,” Corinne says and cackles at her own words.
“Well, he doesn’t know, now does he?”
“For now. Which brings me back to what I came here for. Where’s my money?”
I stop pacing and whirl around to glare at her. I’m so sick of this shit. She’s too stupid to see I never planned to pay her in the first place.
“I ain’t got it. What you gonna do? Take the baby back? She’s eighteen. What’s done is done,” I seethe.
“Donna. Don’t make me do this.”
“Do what? Tell Cliff you stole his sperm and used a turkey baster to impregnant me? Guess what, I don’t give a shit. The marriage is over, I got nothing.
“That asshole I sent to her couldn’t even rape her and fuck her up in the head so she wouldn’t make it big or want to come back to Trevor. You all failed me.
“That coward couldn’t even face me or tell me he failed. He just up and disappeared,” I blurt the words out before I can think better of it.
I’m losing it all, and it’s all that singing Black bitch’s fault. Why couldn’t she stay the fuck away? She’s just like that cunt my father married. They never stay away.
“You did what?” Corinne breathes incredulously.
“You heard me. I’m not repeating myself. I knew that letter wasn’t enough. I was right. She called, and I knew I had to do something. I called in an old favor. Some good that did me.”
“You’re fucking crazy. The baby was one thing. Girls our age were doing that all the time to trap high profile guys. But this … Donna, tell me you’re joking.”
“Corinne those girls were stealing condoms from guys they slept with. Not drunk guys they jerked off passed out in the back of their trucks. Don’t give me that bullshit as if you’re so fucking innocent,” I snarl back.
“You keep that money. You’re going to need it to buy your way out of hell. I’m sorry I ever helped you trick that man.
“I was young and stupid and have regretted it every day since. Maybe my current situation is karma for what I’ve done. You get off on hurting people all to live beyond your means like your entitled to something.
“You’ve looked down on me like some poor white trash for the last time. I hope you get everything coming for you. And another thing. If you’re not going to care about him, leave Collen alone. He doesn’t need to become toxic like you,” she hisses as she grabs her things and then storms out.
“Good riddance,” I call after her.
I look at the TV she never cut off and mock the man on the screen. “I Stand with Trevor Monroe. Well, fuck you and Trevor Monroe.”
