29. Chapter 29

The crystal chandelier glints coldly above the long mahogany table, failing to impart any warmth to the cavernous dining room. I keep my gaze fixed on my plate, hyperaware of Gerald”s eyes boring into me from across the table.

”You both seem...distracted lately,” he says, shattering the silence. ”Anything you”d like to share?”

I force a smile, willing my voice to remain steady. ”Just the usual. Nothing out of the ordinary.” The lie tastes bitter on my tongue.

My pulse races, knowing his growing suspicion only spells more danger.

”Loyalty is so rare these days,” Gerald muses over his steak tartare, feigning a casual tone. ”Especially when the future is at stake.”

The underlying threat in his words makes my stomach churn. He”s fishing for information, suggesting he knows more than he”s letting on.

I clutch Yara”s hand under the table, squeezing it for reassurance. She”s the only thing that matters.

I have to protect her, no matter the cost.

Gerald”s gaze bores into me, as sharp and menacing as a dagger. Beneath the table, my legs tremble.

But I refuse to show weakness. He won”t see me sweat.

Yara and I are trapped in his web of deception and manipulation. But I swore to myself, we will find a way out.

His charming threats don”t own us. And I”ll be damned if I let him hurt my daughter.

I nod, pretending to focus on the wilted salad on my plate as my mind races.

Yara and I are under constant surveillance here. Gerald”s mansion is less a home than a cage. A pretty cage, but a cage nonetheless.

As soon as dinner ends, I pulled Yara aside, whispering urgently, ”He”s watching us. Even more closely than before. He knows something is up, so we have to be extra careful.”

Her eyes widen in fear. We both know the implications—our every move is being monitored.

The realization of the extent of his surveillance chills me to the core. His net is closing, and before long not even Morello will be able to help us.

The next morning, Gerald corners me alone. His charm barely conceals the steel in his gaze.

”Like we”ve discussed before, I think it”s time you took on more responsibilities around here,” he suggests smoothly. ”It would be unfortunate if I had to...re-evaluate your role due to lack of cooperation.”

The threat beneath his words is crystal clear. Comply, or suffer the consequences.

”And Yara is such a bright girl,” he adds. ”It would be a shame if her education was disrupted and she had to go into… full-time work. But cooperation ensures her future.”

The mention of Yara”s name makes my blood run cold.

I confront him, feigning calm despite my racing pulse. ”What do you want from us? Clearly you”re upset about something. Why this sudden interest in loyalty?”

”It”s not sudden, Alina,” he replies coolly. ”Just more...immediate. I expect your full cooperation. That”s all.”

His true intentions are laid bare. Submit and obey, or he”ll make us suffer. Trapped in his twisted games, I seethe with anger and fear.

But I won”t let him hurt Yara. She”s all that matters.

My thoughts race as I consider the full extent of the peril we”re in. Gerald”s charming veneer hides the monster within, a man who will stop at nothing to control us completely.

A man who has proven over and over again to be petty and malicious and vindictive.

Someone who is extremely dangerous not to have on your side.

Fear for Yara”s safety wars with anger at my own helplessness. We”re well and truly trapped, like prey caught in the jaws of a predator.

But I”m a survivor above all else, and my mama bear instincts are kicking in. I won”t surrender without a fight.

Cautiously, I continue preparing for any chance to slip free of Gerald”s clutches even with the members of his extensive security detail eyeing us like hawks.

My planning is subtle, my actions discreet, as I attempt to shield the highly perceptive Yara from the harsh reality facing us.

Each small act of defiance fuels my resolve. I”ll continue to endure whatever is necessary to keep Yara safe.

Tonight, holding her close, I whisper fierce promises into the darkness.

”He doesn”t own us. No matter what threats he makes, we”ll find a way out. I”ll protect you, always.”

It”s a vow of both motherly protection and steadfast resistance.

Gerald”s manipulations only strengthen my commitment to securing our freedom. It”s time to meet with Agent Morello.

Before it”s too late.
