30. Chapter 30

The stillness of the pond belies the storm brewing between us.

Ducks glide across the glassy surface, oblivious to the gravity of our conversation.

Morello”s brown eyes bore into mine, and there”s a depth to them I hadn”t noticed before. I was too distracted to notice that he”s incredibly hot… in an FBI agent kind of way.

”I want you to know that helping you and Yara is my priority. Taking down Gerald comes second.”

I fight the urge to roll my eyes. Men and their empty promises.

Yet something in his unwavering gaze gives me pause. Could he be different?

”I look forward to learning more about you, you know. You”re a very interesting person,” he says, a playful glint softening the intensity of his focus.

I laugh, the sound hollow. ”It takes a lot of trauma to become interesting. I”m not sure I”d do it all over again given the chance.”

He leans in, his deep voice gentle yet firm. ”Nobody asks for the cards they”re dealt. It”s what you do with them that counts.”

”What are you, a motivational speaker?” I scoff. ”Because that”s corny as fuck.”

He chuckles, undeterred. ”Hey, it”s true. Life is what you make of it.”

Something in his lighthearted persistence cracks my skepticism. I glance away, pensive.

”But sometimes life throws stuff at you that you can”t come back from.”

”Yet here you are,” he says softly, turning my chin to meet his gaze again.

I want to pull away, but find myself transfixed. In his eyes I see understanding, respect.

Slowly, I nod. ”Yes...here I am.”

The space between us crackles with newfound connection. Partnership. Possibility. I feel a glimmer of something I”d long given up on.

Hope.

Morello”s eyes hold mine a moment longer before he leans back, exhaling slowly.

The charged atmosphere dissipates as he shifts back into agent mode.

”Alright, time to get down to business. We need to strategize how to get solid evidence against Gerald without exposing you and Yara to unnecessary risk.”

I nod, my thoughts refocusing. ”Agreed. What do you suggest?”

He steeples his fingers, his brow furrowed in concentration. ”I”ll keep tracking his movements, look for patterns we can exploit. In the meantime, see if you can get access to his phone or computer—even a few texts or emails could give us leverage.”

”Easier said than done,” I sigh. ”He keeps that phone glued to him and has his men”s eyes on me constantly. I could only get away today because I made an excuse about a gynecologist appointment. But I”ll try.”

”Good. And document anything suspicious he does or says, no matter how small. We need an airtight case.”

I chew my lip anxiously. ”This could get dangerous fast if he catches on. I need to know Yara will be protected, whatever happens to me.”

Morello meets my eyes, resolute. ”You have my word—I”ll do whatever it takes to keep you both safe.”

I search his face and see only fierce determination. Slowly, I exhale, allowing myself to trust.

”Okay then. Let”s take this bastard down.”

Morello grins. ”That”s what I like to hear.”

We hash out a few more details, then stand to leave. As we walk back through the quiet park, I feel a new sense of purpose.

With Morello by my side, I finally have hope—for justice, and—a strange thought crosses my mind—maybe something more.

We reach the park entrance and pause, the weight of our task lingering between us. Morello turns to me, his eyes full of warmth and understanding.

”It won”t be easy, but we”ve got this, Alina. Together. One step at a time.”

I manage a small smile, comforted by his reassurance. ”One step at a time.”

He squeezes my shoulder gently.

The simple touch sends a spark through me.

I meet his gaze, seeing my own tentative longing reflected back.

Slowly, reluctantly, we step apart.

But as I walk to my car, I feel Morello”s eyes on me.

I turn back. He lifts his hand in a silent wave, his lips quirked in a half-smile.

My heart flutters.

With everything at stake, I hardly dare acknowledge the attraction growing between us.

But in that lingering glance, I see a future where we might explore this connection without fear. A future that, with Morello”s help, I finally dare believe could be possible.

I drive away with hope for freedom, for justice, and maybe even for love.

The road ahead is uncertain, but now there is renewed hope. And that makes all the difference.
